Why are people interested in treating the symptom and not the problem? No one is asking WHY they are street kids. And let's not come up with some generic, general answer as to how they came to be that way. All homeless people aren't lazy fucks (not saying you are saying that). Most of them are victims of circumstance or terrible parenting.
You're right it isn't appropriate to genralize. I know that there are good number who are there because of substance abuse problems, another large component are the mentally ill and after the recent recession a lot of people just got down on their luck. As for the violent homeless teens and twenty somethings that rove downtown I'm guessing a majority are there because of drug problems or started off as runaways and probably picked up a drug habit -- I don't have any hard data on this, but I don't think it's too far off the mark. At least the run-ins I've had I was 99% sure they were on something and I only speculate that because I worked as a paramedic for a number of years and I could recognize "the look."
So if we wanted to "crack down" on them, wouldn't finding what they need (besides locking them up) be the best option (like a job or school)? People who complain about them being unemployed should think about how they would find a job (that pays a living wage) without a phone or an address. However the MFs that stole your gear and the others who demanded money from you need their asses beat. Plain and simple. Regarding the OP, TJ is a fucking DICK for what he did. And whoever he did it to was just trying to get some sleep. Shameful..
You don't just have to use a billy club to "crack down" but the violent assholes that harass and assault people need to be jailed.

So you're saying it's ok what he did as long as he didn't shout out a homophobic slur? I think that's an odd stance, but ok
If a significant number of homeless youth are in violent roving street gangs, and a significant number of homeless youth are LGBT... are you saying a significant number of LGBT youth are violent?
