I always thought PapaG was on of the more popular posters in the forum? Guess I was wrong.

It may sound strange, but it seems like he's been wanting to get banned for awhile. I think he actually got what he wanted. There was one go 'round with Denny a while back that made it clear to me (atheist Denny had Godlike patience on that one.)

Breaking out my armchair psychologist, I'd say he was addicted to S2 and the only way he could break the habit was to be excommunicated. Let's all imagine him playing with his dog on a sunny day and filling backpacks with school supplies for disadvantaged youth.

One side of any conversation can be damning. In this case context plays a big part. I did not follow this thread last night, in fact I did not realize that he had been actually banned until this mourning. I thought the references were in jest..

Truth be told, I feel that I am partly to blame for getting him all riled up. At least early on in the conversation. I chimed in regarding the self victimizing nature and the myopic, narrow view..admittedly I did so in an attacking manor because of the total lack of respect I feel for the other poster. This fostered the need for SPD to come to the rescue and redact not only my post but the entire thread, topic and all. As I implied at that time, I believed SPD acted graciously and without fault.
I honestly feel that the antagonizing attitude that PapaG was contending with had just as much to do with his departure, and watching this hanging party with the antagonist dancing on the fresh grave has been a joke..

    It's an interesting theory.

I don't generally approve of banning and I don't think S2 does either. I'm glad the Papa wasn't trolling me, because the few times I have tussled with him I just felt like I was getting trolled and distracted. He's very good at it and a formidable opponent. I tend to think we are better off without him and hopefully he is happier without us. If he comes back, I don't have a problem with it. Surely without the Papa here, modding will be easier.

Being a Mod is a tough and thankless job. People can criticize all they want, but last I checked we pay nothing to be part of this site and it's a volunteer position. If you think you can Mod better, I am sure Denny would be happy to have you.

When someone melts down online, its usually due to other factors that are stressful in his "real" life. Speaking from experience.

The forum rules don't say anything at all. You have to read them.

I was noticing it too. Especially towards Denny. I was thinking to myself "dang he wants Denny to lose it and ban him". Maybe this is what he wanted. Push the envelope enough to force him out?

No it's not. It's about behavior towards others.

Expecting others to behave in a way that is different than you behave is hypocritical and immature.

I had him on ignore. All this does is unclutter my computer screen.

I had him on ignore, not because of any opinion he ever offered, but because he made the experience of participating on this board extremely unpleasant at times. I took him off ignore for a while, but then back he went.

I am open to all opinions and insights. That's what I come here for. The more the merrier. That and a certain commaraderie. And the humor. I need a little escape now and then during my stressful day. I don't need extra stress from assholes on a message board. I don't come here to be insulted, or get into pointless arguments, flame fests, and dick measuring contests. Some do. Bully for them. That's what 'ignore' is for.

Ban him, unban him, makes no never mind to me.

Agreed. Same could probably be said for PapaG. That doesn't excuse the behavior or give one a right to expect different behavior from somebody else.

    Permitted by whom? You?

If you're referring to some loosely followed and subjective "rules" of this board, please show me where it says you can personally attack somebody through PM.

I didn't think he should be banned either. But he is.

I think your PMs show that you personally attacked him and if PapaG was banned, the mods should consider banning you too.

I've been a mod at a forum where at least one of the admins would bait a poster until he crossed the line and then banned him.

I don't want any part of that. For the most part, I want to be a poster like everyone else here. I've consistently told mods that if they feel they need to delete or edit my posts, to treat me like any other poster.

Some people have really had it in for the mods. Like it's some sort of authority complex or something. The mods are not paid, they volunteer, they actually do a lot of work, and the ones who stick to it have been downright outstanding in my book.

Perhaps, but he was not banned for insulting once, twice, three times ...., it was many repeated offenses, repeated warnings, and then attacking the mods. Also, although I agree I was a dick in my PM and shouldn't have sent it, I do find a big difference between public and private, and I also find a difference between insults and slander.

There hasn't been any discussion of banning anyone except for PapaG. That discussion has been going on for a long time, too. We don't take it lightly and it isn't about one particular offense being so egregious he had to be banned. It's been a lot of offenses piling up to the point where enough was enough.

So no, we wouldn't consider banning anyone who's been a perfectly fine member of the community here.
