    Why do the Nuggets suddenly want to trade Faried? Obviously, it's because they are seeing Hickson as the better player in camp.

    Here we are guessing who's better, while a physical comparison is possible in Denver. My favorite player from last year, whom Olshey never noticed till I screamed on this board to get Hickson, is obviously kicking Faried's ass.

    Olshey reads this board for my nuggets of wisdom.

    Juwan could help us immeasurably.

    It's like this: Sure, you're a young moderator, full of energy and ambition. But if this board had a chance at landing grizzled old Truebluefan, with 700,000 posts under his belt, you'd be out on your ear. That poor old guy has such a work ethic, he probably moonlights as a Santa's elf when Denny lays him off in the winter. Juwan could teach the young bucks tips, plus he's a better shooter than any of our big men except Aldridge.

    Would I much rather have had Faried and Rudy for the last 2 years than Nolan Smith and Felton? Uh, yeah. And as Pinwheel said, a large part of his value comes from being the #21 pick and getting paid like it. (He's made less in the last 2 years than Juwan Howard and Ronnie Price, for instance ;) )

    But he's NOT polished. This is not a Millsap or Jefferson situation, where you could debate sticking them at the starting 4 and seeing what you could get for LMA. Faried is not starter material yet, and (as also pointed out) is basically Robinson with lower ceiling but who's achieved more of his potential.

    Where he IS great, though, is in rebounding and transition. I think it was in Lowe's Grantland article where it said that his post-up points-per-possession were about .61 PPP or so (I'll look it up in a minute), but in transition it's 1.32 PPP. That's pretty amazing. He's anti-LaMonster in the paint, but an absolutely elite rebounder.

    For defense, here's the list of all-time players who've averaged a DRB>22%, in more than 2200 minutes, with a block and steal per game.

    Of active players, only KG, Howard, Camby and Faried have done it. They're pretty good defenders. Others on the list: Kareem, the Admiral, the Dream, Moses, Barkley, Ben Wallace, Shawn Kemp, Elvin Hayes, Bill Walton, Buck Williams, Jack Sikma. Pretty darn good company.

    If for some reason LMA could play C all the time, having someone like Faried at the 4 would probably work well. But I can't see relying on Faried being on the floor for 35 mpg next to RoLo's or MyLe's offense. And that makes him a backup, though a valuable one. And if you traded Robinson or Leonard for him, I wouldn't cry too much. But you can't give up a starter's ransom for him, and you can't really give him an extension beyond the MLE, which I'm not sure he'd take. :dunno:

    Which is why I was advocating for Hickson. You thought I was arguing for Faried?

    Steve Kyler is the Editor and Publisher of HOOPSWORLD covering the NBA and basketball for USA Today Sports.

    Where might he get this "monster contract" from? I'd imagine a team with an offensively-skilled big man who runs a good transition game. He has this year and next before his RFA, so who would trade for him expecting to give him a "monster extension" or match a big RFA deal?

    He'd look pretty good with Nash/K*be/Pau (though there'd be no one to trade for him there).
    GSW next to Lee or Bogut would probably be a good fit (Curry/Iggy/Barnes/Faried/Lee or Bogut). Would DEN want Klay or would GSW give up Barnes?
    Maybe NOP next to Davis?
    HOU might be a fit, but I don't see DEN wanting Asik back.
    NJN as a replacement for KG next to Brookie Monster, but again, who are they giving up for him and how are they making the salaries work? And I don't think of NJN as an "uptempo" team.
    CHA next to Zeller or Al Jefferson?

    Maxing out Faried would be a huge mistake. He's a great player, but he's a role player, not a star.

    Heck, I think the 4/36M Splitter deal might be too much. Like I said, if he was making, say, roughly what Wes was making, I think that's do-able. Elite role players are hard to come by. A JJ Redick 4/27M wouldn't be horrible. Somewhere in that range.

    But is he Steph Curry (4/44M)? Batum (4/46M)? No. LMA (5/65M)? Of course not. Max? LOL.

    Makes me wonder if they brought in JJ Hickson as insurance. They could sell high and move Hickson into the starting lineup.

    Faried will get paid big because GM's LOVE to give out huge contracts for people with "potential" oozing out of them. Someone is going to talk themselves into giving him close to 10m/y because they are convinced they can get him to cash in on his potential.

    Yeah, no. Hickson got a lot of cheap points and rebounds due TO LaMarcus drawing the attention of the defense. I'm not dogging on Hickson - he had a good season, but to say he often outplayed our #1 option in an All-Star season is hyperbole at best.

    Right. Last season with Hickson as our starting center:

    We were outrebounded by our opponents
    Rebounded better as a team when Hickson was on the bench
    We were DEAD LAST in opponent's points in the paint
    Were DEAD LAST in opponent's 2-point FG%
    Won 33 games

    And you really want more of that????

    So far in the preseason (I know it's only preseason), with an actual center, we are absolutely dominating our opponents on the glass. I admired Hickson for his hustle and effort, but no way in hell do I want to see him starting for the Blazers ever again. In fact, I'd LOVE to see him starting for a division rival in Denver. The ONLY reason Denver is shopping Faried is money. They don't want to give him a big contract next summer. Even after Hickson's "breakout" season, Denver got him cheap, because his weaknesses are many and glaring. Denver thought he as a $5 million a year player (below league average). Nobody else thought he was even worth that. They were right.

    Most definitely. They got Hickson cheap, and that allows them to shop Faried and hope to get something of value in return. Worst case, they let Faried walk after the season is over and let Hickson start next year. Personally, as a Blazer fan, I like that scenario.

    BTW, I agree with those who think we should pass on Faried and keep Robinson. Faried was a steal where he was drafted, and would have been a great backup power forward behind Aldridge - when he was drafted. But, that ship has sailed. Faried has been starting in Denver, will expect to keep starting and will expect starter's money. He's no longer the great value he once was. Thomas Robinson is the same type of player, but younger and cheaper with more offensive upside. It is now TRob who is the great value - on his affordable rookie deal. No need to overspend on Faried when we already have Robinson at $3 - $4 million over the next three seasons.

    Started, went 1-8
    Started, went 2-6
    Came off the bench (Hickson started instead), went 10-12
    Came off the bench (Hickson started instead), went 0-3

    (edit: quick question - what would people including me be saying if our denigrated backup C put up these numbers? We'd be screaming.)

    Notes: ESPN lists him as a SF.
    He seems to have lost his starting job to Hickson.
    He wants a big contract.

    I like Faried a lot actually, but....
    We have good chemistry now.
    Our team's only real weakness is backup C, though some seek a better starting SG and C as well.
    Faried is none of these. So, for us to trade for him he'd have to be cheap which I'm sure is not the case.

    First off, I want to say I appreciate the direction this Nuggets organization is going... straight down.

    Great stats BNM.It's obvious the Nuggets are putting out trade feelers for Ken Faried because his contract is coming up, and despite his hype and popularity (I really like his personality and attitude on and off the court), they know he's a one-dimensional player who's about to get a biiiig payday he probably doesn't actually deserve. Also, the Nuggets are just cheap, which sucks for their fans.

    Hickson is the very definition of fool's gold though. The Nuggets are hurting themselves for choosing him over Faried (if that is in fact what they intend to do)... but trading for Faried, at his upcoming salary... no way jose.

    If I was Denver, I'd see if Detroit would bite on a Faried for Monroe deal. Not sure how well Faried would do next to Drummond though.
