That's better: When it comes to the best of the best schools across Oregon, 15 of Beaverton’s 51 schools were rated level 5 on the statewide report cards released Oct. 10. That places those schools among the top 10 percent of the 1,200 schools rated by the Oregon Department of Education based on their achievement in 2011-12 and 2012-13. In addition, all of the top achievers were above average compared to schools with similar demographics, including number of kids in poverty, English language learners and under-served minorities. Twenty-four Beaverton schools received a level 4 and also were rated above average compared to their peer schools. Another 10 received level 3 and two schools landed at level 2. Beaverton had no schools rated at level 1.
Beaverton was the safest city in Oregon in 2012, according to a study released by CQ Press in January. The study only examined cities with populations above 75,000, of which Oregon has eight, according to 2011 data from Portland State University. The CQ ranking listed Beaverton as the 55th safest city in the country, a jump from its position as 64th the year before. http://www.oregonlive.com/beaverton/index.ssf/2013/03/study_names_beaverton_safest_o.html
