Sounds like an oxymoron, but apparently it's true. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/storie...ME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-11-10-17-03-15 LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It looked like a typical Sunday morning at any mega-church. Several hundred people, including families with small children, packed in for more than an hour of rousing music, an inspirational talk and some quiet reflection. The only thing missing was God. Nearly three dozen gatherings dubbed "atheist mega-churches" by supporters and detractors have sprung up around the U.S. and Australia - with more to come - after finding success in Great Britain earlier this year. The movement fueled by social media and spearheaded by two prominent British comedians is no joke. On Sunday, the inaugural Sunday Assembly in Los Angeles attracted several hundred people bound by their belief in non-belief. Similar gatherings in San Diego, Nashville, New York and other U.S. cities have drawn hundreds of atheists seeking the camaraderie of a congregation without religion or ritual. The founders, British duo Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans, are currently on a tongue-in-cheek "40 Dates, 40 Nights" tour around the U.S. and Australia to drum up donations and help launch new Sunday Assemblies. They hope to raise more than $800,000 that will help atheists launch their pop-up congregations around the world. So far, they have raised about $50,000. They don't bash believers but want to find a new way to meet likeminded people, engage in the community and make their presence more visible in a landscape dominated by faith.
church CHərCH/ noun noun: church; plural noun: churches 1. a building used for public Christian worship. "they came to church with me" synonyms: place of worship, house of God, house of worship So, NOT a "church" in any way, shape, or form. Nor does "faith" or "worship" factor into atheism in any way, shape, or form.
"Faith" and Atheism go hand to hand, unless you have 100% proof God doesn't exist. It takes a level of faith to believe there is absolutely no God. Your argument for "Church" is 100% valid. I concede.
You are not asking for proof, you are asking for disproof. Everything we know about existence disproves any possibility that a superbeing created the universe. Having spent quite a large chunk of my youth investigating many religions big and small, it became obvious they are all based on lies and absurdities, created to frighten and control the masses. Smoke and mirrors, nothing more. The quite obvious ABSENCE of "god" is proof there is no "god". Faith is simply hoping that something magical you know can't be true somehow is true. Like an email from Nigeria wanting you to accept a transfer of several million dollars.
Atheists wanting to get together on Sundays? What's next? Gays wanting to get married? Women wanting to vote? Black people wanting not to be slaves? It's madness! barfo
Sorry, but if you believe there is absolutely no God, there must be concrete evidence that substantiates it. Otherwise, it's just a belief. And since you "believe" then that requires a level of "Faith". And the rest of your mumbo jumbo has no relevance to this topic.
presumably 99.9% of 'atheist' church members would disagree with Maris, so you can feel free to call it an agnostic church if you want.
That's fine. I'm not in the mood to go back and forth on these theist/anti theist threads. So you guys go for it! Praise Dawkins!
What's next? Why, atheist revival meetings, speaking in atheist tongues, atheist televangelists, etc. can't miss out on all the fun!
Believe is your word, not mine. So your post is not relevant to my post. I have no faith, no beliefs. I know.
We of the Church of Bob take pity upon all you golden future losers, baking the cake for a decade of purgatory to appease your evil Oregonian gods.
