http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bulls/post/_/id/14254/forman-faces-a-20-million-question States we have $20m in cap space if we amnesty Boozer and let Deng and Kirk walk. It even mentions Coon came up with the number. Using that as a starting point, and 7 cap holds is about $5.6M. So it looks to me more like $14m in cap space could be cleared. $5M to get Mirotic over? What am I missing, transplant. Seems like we came up with a number like $2M after Mirotic, not $9M. I bet we could sign two really good players with that money.
Since I last put out #s on this site, I've refined my understanding (and my #s), but $20mil is just wrong. The writer is correct that the Bulls have $42mil tied up in Rose, Noah, Gibson, Butler and Teague next season, but he overlooks about $5mil in salary commitments to Dunleavy and Snell next season. Then you have a $1mil estimate for a 2014 1st rounder, the $5mil for Mirotic, $333,333 for Hamilton and a couple cap holds to get the total roster to 12 players (I've since learned that for this purpose, it's 12 not 13). So here's what I think it looks like if the Bulls amnesty Boozer, let Deng and Hinrich walk (renounce their Bird rights) and elect not to pick up their year 2 option on Murphy: Player 2014-15 Salary/Hold Derrick Rose $18,862,875 Carlos Boozer Luol Deng Joakim Noah $12,200,000 Mirotic cap hold $5,000,000 Kirk Hinrich Taj Gibson $8,000,000 Mike Dunleavy $3,326,235 Jimmy Butler $2,008,748 Marquis Teague $1,120,920 Tony Snell $1,472,400 Erik Murphy 1 first-round rookie (est) $1,000,000 2 vet mins @$507,336 per $1,014,672 R. Hamilton 1/3 of $1mil $333,334 Team Total $54,339,184 Estimated salary cap $62,000,000 Estimated cap space $7,660,816 Also, while $62mil is being used by some as an estimate of the 2014-15 cap #, it should be pointed out that the 2013-14 cap is $58.679mil, so the $62mil would represent a 5.7% increase.
You and you seem to making great progress. The Bulls didn't have to commit to Teague for next season, but they did. The Bulls could renounce their first-round pick and save about $500k. It's possible that the Bulls could get Charlotte's pick in the 2014 draft and it could cost as much as $2.2mil. Edit: they could renounce this pick as well.
Charlotte pick is top 10 protected right? They're 3-2 right now but Hollinger's algorithm only has them as the 25th best team. I wouldn't mind a mid lottery pick in the upcoming draft.
It's not that I for one minute doubt Hollinger's algorithm, but I just wanted to cover as many of the possibilities as I could think of. Sent from my GT-P1010 using Tapatalk 2
