Thank for you posting that link, Brian. It is a well written article and that also answered some of the questions I asked myself.

Sounds like both white and black people are telling you what you can and cannot say.

So if you, on your own private time, said it, the NAACP and your employer would stop you?

Riley Cooper said it on his own private time

you aren't free from ramifications of saying things. The 1st amendment is only about the government making it a law. Private companies that you work for, or customers of a store/fans of a team can retaliate as they see fit (within the law).

I think people seem to confuse the two a lot. You can say ******, but I can also call for a boycott of your store/team/business.

It's the GOVERNMENT who can't. I sure as fuck can.

Also, didn't Riley Cooper say it in the locker room and during practices? And this

isn't in the privacy of his home.

If I called my boss an asshole, I think the ramifications could be bad.

If I told my boss I hate woman, I think the ramifications could be bad.

If I told my boss that the government put wires in my brain and are constantly watching me, I think the ramification could be bad.

Why is my boss controlling what I think and say?

I didn't know those two entities were physically restraining you from saying the word. Whatever.

All communication is dictated by social mores and has undertone, intent, and consequences. We don't live in a cultural vacuum. Accept that different people can, and will, say different things.

I just don't get why MM and a couple others are so perturbed by the idea that some people don't like white people to say the N-word but don't have the same problem about much less heated racial slurs against white people like cracker. Most people think both are wrong, but N is more wrong. It's a persons right legally to be able to say it, and it's my right to lose all respect for the person (depending somewhat on context) if they use it.

It might be a bit of a double standard, but look at the background as to why there is that double standard. It's cemented in a history of racism. You take those words out of context, give them to two alien species with no history, I couldn't give a shit about them using either word. But this is the real world, this is in a society with an actual history, and that history informs our current societal norms.

No but you see, slavery is over and no one is racist anymore. Therefore my indifference to people I offend is justified.

I think in the case of MM, he answered that in his original post with this idea bothering him:

Why can black people tell white people what they can and can't say then?

I have a HUGE problem with the double standard. All racial slurs are bad, and NONE are worse than the others.

No but you see, racism and slavery are different. A 24 year old white supremacist has never owned a slave in his life, but he is still racist.

You and I agree on the first part, all are bad. The second part just isnt the case. Even if we stay in one race there is a gradient. Calling a Black person the N-word is worse than calling him colored. both are slurs, one is worse.
