Hoopsworld is hinting that they have a source that is saying just that. Posted today. http://www.hoopsworld.com/source-bu...eal&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter So many of us see him being moved, it looks like we may be wrong. Why???
This is the first big order of business that need to be figured out ASAP. The Bulls management has access to the finest experts in the land. If the BUlls org after consulting with them needs to decide what the probabilities are of Rose coming back next year strong and being an all-star level player for the remainder of his contract. The Bulls management also have to have an idea of what they wanted to do with Deng. Now they may have to act quicker than planned since this season is lost. They know what the market value for Deng is at this point. They should know their willingness to pay it, but a lot would depend on Rose. Standing pat and letting him walk for nothing seems like the worst possible situation. If they want to pay him what the market demands, then fine. Construct the roster going forward around Rose,Deng,Butler,Mitoric,Noah. This of course all depends on Rose coming back to an all-star / near MVP level. They need to make that call. If they are not willing to pay what the market will demand for Deng, then its time to dump. Get some asset in return, lose a few more games and start the rebuild. Doing nothing though is a terrible decision. Its also the easiest, most passive one. We'll see what happens.
It really comes down to this. If some team is willing to pay Deng 4 years/$60mil, are you willing to match/beat that? Trying and failing to sign Deng this coming offseason is simply unacceptable.
Hell no, you don't pay that. If Deng does get a silly contract offer like that, we might be able to S&T him. But not if we're over the LT as far as we are, right?
If you're over the LT apron or trading for a S&T'd player would put you over the apron, the trade would not be allowed. The Bulls could S&T Deng as long as their team salary was reduced by the trade. At least this is how I read it. IMO, the Bulls shouldn't risk the possibility of trying and failing to re-sign Deng this summer. Either, by the trade deadline, they reach a meeting of the minds with Deng's camp about a contract the team can live with or they trade him...best offer. Link
Maybe since they're trading away the player, the S&T rule doesn't apply. Deng is in the same spot DHoward was before traded to the Lakers. The Lakers took a HUGE gamble trading for him - that he'd sign an extension. He didn't. They lost big. The Bulls on the other hand did not trade for him, because we weren't on his list of teams. As soon as we make Deng available, he will make his own list of teams and we may be VERY limited in what we can get for him. If we want to tank, trading him for a 2nd round pick gets us under the LT, saves us repeater status, etc. Finding someone with cap space willing to take him is another story (don't know if anyone has the space). There may be some team who's in "win now" mode that might want to rent him. But they are also not likely to have cap space, so they'd want to trade us big salary in return. Maybe even players good enough to help us win 30 games and have less ping pong balls.
The sad reality, Deng doesn't have much trade value. TBF, I don't think the Bulls publicly stating they're not moving Deng means much of anything. As a negotiation tactic, it seems like it would be advantageous to make it seem like they're willing to stay put. Trading season also hasn't really began yet. I was always under the impression that teams waited until December 15 each year, when newly signed free agents can be moved, before they start getting serious about trade discussions.
I don't think standing pat is the best option, and I don't think burning the whole house down is either. Standing pat doesn't make sense because we'll be taking a fiscally conservative team into repeater tax territory which will impede future moves and the core is almost certain to take a step back next year anyways. I'm also bemused at all the RealGM folks who are in a rush to recreate the 99-03 years by shedding every productive player we have for pennies on the dollar in order for some additional ping pong balls this year. Too much rebuilding can definitely be a bad thing. I'm much more interested in quality than quantity. With this in mind, it can make sense to keep Deng around. If you think he can maintain his level of play for another 3 years, his contract would coincide with Rose's, and he could finish out his career with Rose era 2.0. I think Taj and Boozer are the most likely to be used in trades. If Boozer has a relatively productive year you could trade him for some combination of useful players and expirings to shed salary. In general I think the goal of re-aligning our salaries and somehow turning some combination of our existing pieces into a quality rookie is the best way to go.
We cant stand pat. No Deng is not work 4/15 mill a year. That being said, I just got this tweet: Chicago Bulls are receiving many calls from teams expressing interest in Luol Deng. Talks in early stages (Source: Carlos Douglas Jr) https://twitter.com/chicagobullsbot/status/405476589594374144
Derrick Rose came along once in a decade (or more). The rest of the guys weren't that hard to assemble. And if we want a team as bad as we have now, without Rose, we could sign lots of guys like Nate, Marco, Dunleavy, etc. I think we're looking at two years down the road, not next season or this, before we will know what we have with Rose. The shot to pair Rose with a franchise player in the draft is a no brainer.
He's incrementally better than Butler at this point, and Jimmy is way cheaper. We can use the savings to sign a deeper bench, no?
No, right? You're not going to have any substantial cap space unless you also move Boozer and Noah or Gibson. Didn't Transplant run the calculations? If you trade Deng and amnesty Boozer, you're still only getting like 6M for free agency. Deng is better than any player/combination of players you could get for 6M. So basically what are the franchise's options? Stand put: Amnesty Boozer; resign Deng; wait for Rose to return; add talent through the franchise's pick and the Hornet's pick; sign Mirotic (full MLE). Amnesty Boozer/Let Deng walk: Amnesty Boozer; wait for Rose to return; add talent through the franchise's pick and the Hornet's pick; sign Mirotic; sign free agents with 6M. Full on tank: Amnesty Boozer; Do your darndest to trade Deng, Noah, Hinrich, Dunleavy and Gibson for expiring contracts and picks; add talent through improved draft chances and the Charlotte pick; sing Mirotic. In the full on tank scenario your assets are: Rose, Snell, Butler, Teague, Murphy, Mirotic (around 5M), Charlotte and Bulls pick (around 5M), which only leaves you 13,798,178 to sign four players. That's not even a max free agent. What are you going to do with 14M? What am I messing up here?
My money is on the org doing your middle choice there. Boozer gets amnestied and Deng will get a big offer from someone and the org has the cover they need at that point to let him go.
Don't know, but something, I think. Here are my numbers under your full tank scenario: Derrick Rose $18,862,875 Carlos Boozer Luol Deng Joakim Noah Mirotic cap hold $5,000,000 Kirk Hinrich Taj Gibson Mike Dunleavy Jimmy Butler $2,008,748 Marquis Teague $1,120,920 Tony Snell $1,472,400 Erik Murphy $816,482 2 first-round rookies (est) $5,000,000 4 vet mins @$507,336 per $2,029,344 R. Hamilton 1/3 of $1mil $333,334 Team Total $36,644,103 Estimated salary cap $62,000,000 Estimated cap space $25,355,897 If you know you're going to get Lebron James for $20mil of this, I'm in. Otherwise, no thanks.
Oh math. Does Carmelo Anthony do anything for you? C- Gibson pf- Mirotic sf- Melo sg- Butler pg- Rose
Mike McGraw Chicago Bulls changes are coming to this team. It's just a matter of when. https://twitter.com/chicagobullsbot/status/405734055720648705
Melo is definitely an alpha dog scorer. I think signing a 30 year old guy to max salary isn't wise. However, full on tank and Charlotte's pick yielding us 2 players in this draft plus $25M spread among a handful of players like we did the year we signed Boozer, and getting Mirotic over here at least gives us some hope. No?
