Megyn Kelly’s ‘Santa Claus is White’ Line: Crazy Like a Fox

Jokes by 'Daily Show,' MSNBC aside, the Fox News host knows the channel's base

The funniest part of Megyn Kelly’s reassurance to children who might be watching “The Kelly File” that Santa Claus is, indeed, white wasn’t her statement with absolute conviction regarding a fictional character. Although granted, that did sound pretty amusing.

No, the funniest thing is the Fox News Channel host felt compelled during her program Wednesday to address children at all when, in all likelihood, virtually none were watching, unless it was their turn to keep an eye on grandpa for a few minutes.

Not surprisingly, liberal outlets pounced on Kelly’s pronouncement, issued in response to a Slate column that suggested the image of Santa as a jolly old white guy with a beard could be made more inclusive.

Kelly’s comments turned the host into a day-long punchline. Presumably someone at Mediamatters.org had an orgasm, or something close to it, at just how ridiculous the quote would look plastered across its site. Huffington Post summed it up thusly: “OMG: Megyn Kelly REALLY SAID THIS!”

Kelly took the night off Thursday, but MSNBC, of course, couldn’t resist weighing in either. “All In With Chris Hayes” hosted the author of the Slate piece, Aisha Harris, to offer her own on-air response.

As usual, “The Daily Show” dismantled the Fox “War on Christmas” meme, summarizing Kelly’s ostensible concern about kids uncomfortable being with the concept of a non-white Santa as “Yes, West Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.” Stephen Colbert also thanked Kelly on behalf of “all those kids watching Fox News at 9:40 at night.”

If you don't think Fox is trolling, check out Gretchen Carlson's indignation at the Festivus pole. Even Fox thinks Fox's War on Christmas is hilarious.

She is just awful, period. I have no idea why she has her own show.

It was recently revealed that she has no fingerprints, confirming the conspiracy theory that she was grown in Fox's Stepford wife cloning facility. Or she's Jason Bourne?

    If you say so.

I just don't like her or think she has anything meaningful to say.

    You're a team player, Den.

GC and Deuce are funny because they don't actually seem to know what they are doing or saying. When the other presenters on Fox (especially Smith) start getting into these ridiculous debates and issues their earnestness starts to wane. Kelly especially gets a little wry smile going because she knows it's silliness. O'Reilly is the king of it, Coulter the queen. Fox's trolling is sublime in its effectiveness. MSNBC fails miserably at copying the same style with a reverse script. They think they're saving the world from Ailes & Murdoch. Olbermann was supposed to be the antithesis to O'Reilly but he believed too much of what he was saying or being told to.

^ Ditto for Glenn Beck regarding what I said about Olbermann. Turns out Beck is a literal crazy person.

I saw Rachel Maddow do an end of the world piece on a pipeline accident in a rural (2,000 population) town in Arkansas. The horror! She claimed they buried the pipeline and told nobody about it (but the govt. and company actually know where all the pipelines are in spite of her nonsense).

The pipeline leaked and that was detected and shut off within 15 minutes, as required by the government regulation. The company is subject to a $2.5M civil fine.

Why, it's exxon valdez all over again! Everyone bend over and kiss your ass goodbye because there's oil pipelines!

    (seriously?)

"If you like your doctor, you'll get to keep your doctor. Period."

Almost too funny, but so sad at the same time.

What different polar worlds we all live in today. I find that more sad, but very entertaining at the same time.
