All I'm going to say on this topic is this....he couldn't have been that ignorant with his comments that the African Americans were happy that they were singing in the fields and think everything in the world was fine....even years later when he became rich and famous...that is like someone saying..you know those Jews were a happy bunch during to 40's in Germany. .even if you never saw a death camp in person you have to know by now how horrible and immoral it was and is. Only a person who doesn't feel another person of color can make statements like that.

...like I said, I have never watched a minute of the show but just reading some of the quotes and bits and pieces, I think when he made the comments about blacks being "happy in the fields, etc.", maybe he was referring to them being happy at that time. What I'm getting at is that at the time, blacks didn't know what freedom was. Most had been born into slavery and had never known freedom, so therefore, had nothing to compare it to. They were by design, kept down and kept ignorant and uneducated and in servitude. So yeah, maybe in a way, at the time, some were relatively happy. Again, I don't know this for a fact, just speculating on what Phil may have actually meant.

...what I do know is that after all these years, I'm tired of having the slavery subject still thrown in my face and wielded like a weapon so often. As far as i know, slavery was abolished 150 years ago and the equal rights bill was passed 50 years ago. I think it's way past the time to stop playing the race card on so many issues.

BigDaddyAl got it right. But most of the people alive in the 1950s were not likely born into slavery or even to former slaves.

About the 2nd paragraph - we've come a long long way in the past 50 years, which is great. It's a work in progress, though, and we're not done making this country fair or people wouldn't be complaining.

Unfortunately Denny there are also those people who complain just for the sake of complaining because its the only way to get attention. I refer to the Al Sharpton's of the world.

You can pass hundreds of laws it doesn't always change the mindset of a person and their views. I understand some resentment when hearing people say the are tired from hearing someone play the race card....but it is still out there..especially among conservative bible belt regions of America. I've seen if first hand with my own family. I won't get into the details that makes me sick talking about it but their are members of my own family who have bad racist opinions.

Unfortunately Al I think the thing that irks people the most is that the race card for the most part is used now more as an excuse for one's actions & life style instead of circumstances based on actual facts that apply today.

About 20 years ago I got into a discussion with a group of people & at one point this black guy to make a point told me that I owed him. When I asked him why he said "because of slavery". I quickly & very politely said to him, "perhaps my great grandfather owes your great grandfather something but I owe you shit".

My point is that we've come a long in this country just during my lifetime & granted we still have a ways to go. But IMO there's just no place in today's society to pull the race card every time something doesn't go your way.

Sharpton is a clown, but he's also done a lot for civil rights for black people. Getting attention is part of what's needed.

BigDaddyAl got it right again. We may be seeing a lot less overt racism over the past 50 years, but there is a lot of covert racism still here, and there is a lot of disparity and lots of laws and regulations still on the books to be dealt with.

I don't blame the NAACP for using their 1st amendment right to speak up about Robertson's clearly racist and revisionist comments.

You can say things like that all you want, but you are really adding nothing because maybe you have nothing.

Robertson and Sharpton. What a contrast. Is Robertson ordained, or does he just an evangelist? Sharpton IS a reverend.

So you have Sharpton's brand of religion fighting for civil rights, and Robertson saying black people were happy without those rights.

    What a contrast indeed.

    ...well, lemme see,

    1. you asked for proof of something I stated and I provided it.

    2. Rick, and others asked you for proof of some of your accusations, and you failed to provide it.

    3. you failed miserably.

    You're dreaming.

The guys who made sense in this thread were basically shouted out of the thread, accused of faking screen names, etc.

Not only did I offer proof, but several others did.

But there can be no proof if you say all the facts aren't facts. Denial is foolish.

    ...and you're a liar.

...you offered NO proof...when asked again and again for actual quotes, you failed to do so. Sorry but opinions are not "proof"...learn the word.

...you also asked for proof from me...I provided it. (...you might want to revisit post # 100 to help you with your "selective memory")

...you were soundly thrashed and exposed as a tool in this thread...please, just get back to your mindless blog rants.
