A trade for Shumpert and Chandler would give the Blaxers a title.

It's been covered before. The only two contracts that are big enough for a significant trade are Aldridge and Batum. We can't afford guys like Pierce, Garnett, Chandler, etc. Most of our guys are making very small, affordable contracts.

Garnett could be waived, and then choose Portland...

Garnett would never choose Portland. He would go to LAC to be with Doc.

Hm, so while the premise that our 6th/7th men should be Chandler and Shumpert isn't horrible, I'm not sure that including a starter and a rotation player (among other pieces) meets the spirit of that idea.

I'll pass on both. Love Chandler but he has missed a lot of time the past couple seasons and he makes a lot of money.

I didn't know that this forum was a direct line to Paul Allen and Olshey and that we could demand any dumbass trade we see fit and then act butthurt when it doesn't happen immediately.

    I mean, seriously.

Here's about the only way I can make it make sense for the "Blaxers", but I don't think it's necessarily a good deal for the Knicks.

    T-Rob/Wright/Mo/MyLe for Chandler/Shumpert/Udrih

Perhaps if NY wanted more scoring punch off their bench, wanted to grab some young athletic front-line prospects, and wanted to save several million dollars, they might consider this deal.

Paul Allen posts on here from time to time but I'm not allowed to disclose the moniker he is using.

Thank you for clearing that up; i knew that all my work would not go to naught! OK, Paul; you wanta go for it all right now? Leonard, Robinson, Mo, Claver and Barton for Anderson Varejao and Jarrett Jack. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nywkgny
But if Terry Stotts really believes himself when he says Mo Williams is the best backup PG in the league, than maybe you don't do this.

OK, so we now have some trade proposals (none from the OP) that work under the CBA. However, they are all 4-2 or 5-2 trades. Please explain how the Knicks (or Cavs) free up the necessary roster spots to accommodate these unbalanced trades. Are they just going to cut players and pay them millions to not play? I know the Knicks aren't very fiscally responsible, but I'm not sure they want to throw away money just to help us (supposedly) win a championship.

Also, even as bad as the Knicks have been, they are only 4 games out of a playoff seed in the East and only 5 games away from having the #4 seed in the East. It's not unrealistic that once Chandler comes back, they could win enough games in the pathetically awful East to win the even more pathetically awful Atlantic Division and get a top 4 seed in the playoffs. I suspect they'll want to wait until the trade deadline, to see what their playoff chances are, before they consider moving Chandler in a fire sale.

That's a good question. I'll just answer for the Cav's trade. The Cavs are sending out $5 million more in salary than they are bringing back in. They will also be able to save that $5 million next year. They do have 15 guys on their roster and only one has a contract as short as one year, so there is a problem. But they do have two guys whose salaries both add up to only about a million a year. So they won't be hurt much financially cutting them. They could ask for Watson (and maybe a draft pick) instead of Barton; because they probably don't need Watson and he only has one year. So overall they could still save money on this deal.
I still don't know if it's a good deal for Portland. If you don't think that Leonard or Robinson are ever gonna be starting material, then it seems like it is a good idea. I personally would prefer Jack over Williams. He is not much of a defender but it seems he has to be better than Williams. Varejao might instantly be the best defender and rebounder on the team but he doesn't help the problem of an offense deficient 2nd unit. But he sure would be great to have here if something ever happened to Lopez.

The Knicks have two minimum salary guys they could waive to accommodate the deal, which would still make the net salary decrease on their part about $4M. They're presently $19M+ over the luxury tax level. The multiplier at that level is 3.25, meaning they pay $3.25 in tax for every dollar in salary over $15M. Thus, reducing net salary by $4M also saves them $13M in luxury tax. Not to mention that since they currently have $90M+ committed for next year, they're looking at repeater tax rates in 2015, which is $4.25/1 between $15M-$20M over the cap, meaning that this deal saves them $17M in tax for next year as well.

So yes, they could conceivably keep Chandler, win their division, get into the playoffs and lose in the second round to either the Heat or the Pacers (whom they have no chance to beat). Or they could deal him and save a combined $36M in tax and salary over two years, while infusing their roster with a couple young pieces to pair with Hardaway as they start a rebuild.

And if the deal prompts 'Melo to opt out, that would just be a bonus.
