You can be over the apron and receive a S&T player only if you take back enough less salary to get below the apron.

I think both the Bulls and Knicks fail this test.

At the end of the day I think this is what it comes down to.

I really don't think Carmelo wants to leave NY, and I think NY is best off to try and keep him. They have no other stars on their roster, and they've traded away all their draft picks til kingdom come. Really, what chances do they have to get a player that's better?

I think this is all posturing, and the Knicks are going to do some scorched earth cap-clearing to try and get a 2nd star to play with him.

As for what I'd do, I'd probably pull the trigger on any trade that involved 2 assets the Bulls have not named Rose.

Melo is risky, but so is dismantling the team for draft picks. And so is staying the course, which means maintaining an expensive team of role players (albeit extremely good ones) with an injury prone star.

I think I'd rather role the dice with Melo.

    That's my reading as well.

Assuming that the Bulls amnesty Boozer this offseason, they'd be below the apron and could play all the S&T games they want. The Knicks are the problem on this one.

In all seriousness... If we had Melo, he may well be the 2nd or 3rd best player to ever wear a Bulls uniform. Who's better? Jordan for sure. Pippen, probably. Who else: Chet Walker, Artis Gilmore, George Gervin?

In all seriousness.....I think you're right.

Melo's not without his warts, but aside from this season the guys basically been a winner his whole life, even if his reputation hasn't always been that great.

He's clearly not a Duncan, Lebron, Shaq kind of superstar, where you can surround him with role players and still be a contender.

But he is a Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard kind of superstar.....good enough to take role players on a good playoff run each year.

I think most years you can win a title if you have two of those guys on your team.

If you can get Melo, you get him and build around Rose / Melo. Melo would be a top 5 all-time Bull. Rose won a MVP, so if his career gets back on track he'll rank ahead of Melo if Melo is on Nuggets or Knicks type teams forever.

That being said, you get him and build around it. You give up what it takes to get him (hopefully not Noah) and build around Rose-Melo-Noah for the next 3 years as Wade continues to decline.

With Thibs, guys like Gibson and Butler become good role players. Scrappy defense guys you can get in the mid - late 1st round or on reasonable contracts.

But yah, Jordan, Pippen, Rose/Gilmore/Melo/Iceman at this point if he joined the crew.

So what do you guys make of this?

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/lawrence-bynum-find-league-play-article-1.1566399

Courtesy of Mitch Lawrence in the NY Daily News:
I find myself arguing with the validity of this report. I trust that the author has a source who told him this. But if you really know what's happening in Chicago, that's your lede, isn't it? You don't write a couple of sentences mid-way through a rumors article. This story feels way too flippant. I'm guess I'm just not convinced that Lawrence has been informed by a reliable source, although, obviously, he could end up being correct.

Well, its all kind of stuff we already know, right? Most people seem to expect that Boozer will be amnestied. Many are hoping the Bulls dump Deng for *something* and many also don't want him signed to the MAX. I don't think the Bulls intend to sign him for the MAX either, but let another team outbid them if they can't get a good haul for him that preserves precious flexibility. We have already heard that Rose isn't down with rebuilding.

Rose is being well paid to not play. I honestly don't care if he's down with rebuilding. Next year's going to be watching him play his way into shape. 10 games didn't cut it this year, so we may be in for a long rehab anyway.

totally random, but if you do the Deng+Gibson for Melo trade, would CHI fans even entertain a Rondo-and-goodies for Rose followup (assuming Rondo comes back healthy before the deadline)?

If the doctors say Rose can come back 100%, I'd think not. We don't know for sure what they're saying in private.

Interesting, though, because Thibs knows Rondo very well from his time in Boston.

Except SI isn't reporting it, right? SI is just reporting that Lawrence reported it, and Lawrence just reported what a "[l]eague sources with knowledge of Chicago’s plans" told him. You know what a league source is? A source that isn't within the Chicago Bulls. So this is probably more coming from World Wide Wes, trying to set up a second landing place for Anthony, or Deng's agent, Herb Rudoy, who is trying to get times to put offers on the table for his soon to be free agent.

It comes down to whether you think that there is anybody outside of the Bulls' front office knows their plans. I don't think there is.

The Bulls haven't really kept these kinds of secrets, have they?

Do you remember what Boozer did to that franchise? He verbally agreed off the record to sign an extension with them so that they would not pickup a team option, and once they let him into free agency, he signed with another team. I can't imagine that that the front office is going to welcome him back under any circumstances.

As an aside, the owner at the time of this fallout was Gordon Gund, not Dan Gilbert so he didn't personally pick a battle with the current owner. It still strikes me as too close to home though.

What kind of secrets? I don't feel like I have a read on their plans. Do you?

Melo plays for the Knicks, not the Cavs.

^^^. That is, Boozer never had any dealings with the Knicks. Your story was about how Cavs GM Jim Paxson tried to cheat the rules and lost.

Holy crap. For some reason I thought we were discussing Boozer for Bynum again. :-) Boozer to NY? They gutted their whole franchise to get him. They've also given up a good percentage of their draft picks going forward; and they're capped out. They need to retain 'Melo. I can't imagine they'd trade him under these conditions, regardless of whether he says he's going to leave or not.
