The Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) consists of companies such as Audi, GM, Google, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA. The alliance is committed to bringing Android to cars in 2014, according to a press statement released during the Consumer Electronics Show, with a customizable development model that will allow auto companies to easily bring communications technology to drivers. “The worlds of consumer and automotive technologies have never been more closely aligned, and this alliance will only pave the way for faster innovation,” Ricky Hudi, head of Electrics/Electronics Development at AUDI AG, said. “Working toward a common ecosystems benefits driver safety above all.” The alliance aims to bring the latest IT technologies to a full range of vehicles, using recent advancements in the auto field to fuel a "connected experience" with Android devices. "The car is the ultimate mobile computer," Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA, said. "With onboard supercomputing chips, futuristic cars of our dreams will no longer be science fiction. The OAA will enable the car industry to bring these amazing cars to market faster." According to the press statement, timing will vary among companies, but the OAA says consumers can expect to see the first examples of Android connectivity by the end of the year.
