I like it! While we are on the topic of rules in the NBA. I absolutely hate the rule that you can jump out of bounds and save the ball off another player. I don't mind that fact you can jump out of bounds and save the ball before it hits the floor but if you intentionally throw the ball off another player that should result in a team penalty. How about +1 free throw? That just gets me going when I see that.
I would rather see the 3pt alley oop. If the ball is thrown behind the 3pt line and as long as the receiving player doesn't touch the ground before shooting the ball the made basket counts for 3pts. A 4pt shot would just encourage players to jack up a hell of a lot of ugly shots from the outside.
It's nuts, but man would Dame be awesome or what? He shoots over 40% at 28-30 feet already which is like shooting over 80% at 15 feet in that system. It also makes a 4-point lead a one possession game. I also like the 5-pointer at half court or back, but only in the last minute of the game. That might be too bush league though.
And the three pointer doesn't? If you place the 4-point line where the league average is 22-23%, that balances the risk with the reward. Alternatively, just widen the court a few feet in each direction and extend the three point line out to where the average is 30% (like the nfl extending the extra point kick) to keep up with shooters getting better; and get rid of the corner three being so much closer. That lowers the scores but keeps the difficulty hardcore.
I think a 3pt alley oop would spread the court and add excitement at the basket in late game situations. Also, and I have no way to prove it or find out, but I think more alley oops end in a and 1 then fouls on made 3pt shots. A potential 4pt play at the basket would be a good thing for the game.
This right here is a perfect example, this should be a 3pt basket. Batum is beyond the 3pt line when he throws the ball, Lillard catches it in the air and dunks it. If Lillard was fouled when he dunked it he would get the and 1 and have a potential 4pt play.
What about some crazy data driven scoring that changes every season? Like a dunk is always 1 point and then you add 1 point in arcs out from the key such that the area where players averaged 45% last season is worth two, where they average 30% is worth three, there they average 22% is worth 4, but keep it going out to full court, where if a shot from the opposite basket averages 1%, it's worth 50 points
Lots of their alley oops comes from when CP3 is driving to the basket, the defense collapses on him and he tosses the ball up to the rim for a teammate to flush. That would still be a 2pt alley oop because CP3 is inside the 3pt line.
I don't think a 2nd 3pt option that could grow to be as popular as the current 3pt option would be a bad thing. More dunks, more scoring, more excitement. I'd rather see a 2nd way to score 3pts then adding a new way to score 4pts.
For an alley-oop to count as the number of points from where the pass was thrown, wouldn't that make it offensive basket interference? That would really muddy the rules.
I'm not against the idea of a 4 point shot, but how about something even a little bit more innovative and give defensive points? One point each for a block, steal, or charge. Wait...that wouldn't exactly work to the Blazers' advantage. Scratch that.
Throwing the ball off another player that is going for the same ball is a cheap way of getting the ball back. I just don't like it and I never have. Saving the ball to another teammate is fine but throwing it off of another player to save the ball is cheap.
