Was when Jason Grillo interjected a fact about Jeter stats. In all the games Jeter has played in which is 2602 he and the Yankees were mathematically eliminated in only one game. That fact is mind blowing to me when you consider we live in a sports world today that has all the leagues striving for parity. It proves one thing, Jeter was a winner.
I hear what you're saying Frank but I'll tell you, I've always had a problem when people talk about titles. Jeter has 5 rings, Jordan has 6 rings, Russell has 11 rings. This is not boxing or tennis. These are TEAM sports. You can't say this baseball players legacy is better that that guys because he has 5 rings & so & so only has 1. Bill Russell said it best several years back when someone mentioned that he's has more title rings then anyone in the history of sports. To which he responded, "I didn't get these by myself, I wouldn't have any of these if It weren't for the players around me". And he's right. IMO players involved in TEAM sports should never have there careers measured by what there TEAMS have done.
Rick I agree about the team approach first, however the point I was trying to make was that every game Jeter played in but one was meaningful up till today. And as you know as a fellow Celtic fan, Russell was the anchor to all those great Celtic teams that I don't think would of have been so great if Russell was not in the middle. As a kid I remember the Wilt/Russell head to heads. I feel that Wilt was the individual ahead of team type, where Russell and Jeter are team first guys who's teams have benefited by there presence.
that only proves he was on winning teams and not 100% on Jeter. Jeter missed (or did not play in 43 games in 2003) and the team still went to the World Series. Also what about Posada's record or Petittie's. Oneill....cant say anything about Bernie since he was on the crappy teams before the other core members came aboard
Al, let me be clear, my statement was that Jeter played in 2602 games so far. In every game except one, the Yankees (team) were not mathematically eliminated from post season. One game, Maybe Posada is close, or Mo... One fucking game, that is the point, I wasn't saying he was solely responsible, one meaningless game in a career. That is remarkable in today's competitive balance professional sports.
...MB, I knew exactly what you were saying...but for once I decided to stay out of it........It's my day to be nice.
I'll notify the news outlets, I think we should hold a 5:00 PM news conference in commemoration of the streak coming to an end. Gehrig, Ripken, and now 59's
No it proves that the significant constant of those winning teams was Derek Sanderson Jeter. The guy is a winner, management knew it, and leveraged it at every instance. There isn't any discussion of these facts, they are fully corroborated by mgmt statements and actions over past 2 decades. Some men you just can't reach....
While I agree they are team sports, basketball has 5 players on the court at any 1 time... baseball has 9 (10 in the AL... DH & P)
"What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men."
I know that quote is from Cool Hand Luke, but me being the younger tier of posters on here, the first thing I think of when I hear those words are the Guns N' Roses song titled Civil War which starts off with that quote from the movie which then makes me think of the movie...
