I think this was just the NBA wanting to beat the NFL to having the first openly gay player.

Everyone in Russia was in the KGB. I think they started handing out ranks at the end in cereal boxes.

Love it, KS. The more accepted it becomes, the better. Can't wait for that day! :) Repped.

Well, damnit. You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to KingSpeed again.

Totally agree. I can't believe Collins was in the league last season, so obviously I didn't think he warrants being in the league this season, but I think the NBA felt pressure to get him on a squad because it looks bad that all of a sudden he can't get a job right after he comes out (although he was mediocre even in his prime). And then Michael Sam came out and will most likely be the first player in major pro sports to play. NBA wanted to be the first AND didn't want to deal with the criticism that would come if Collins was left out of the NBA.

As bball fans, we all know that hes probably lucky to get a roster spot in the league based on his actual play, but most non-sports media and tabloids lead every sports related headline as "NBA Star XXXXX did this on Saturday night!" even when the guy is a complete scrubjay. 99.9% of the country doesn't know the difference and doesn't differentiate between basketball "stars" and your average NBA player.\

I agree with most of you that this is a good thing, but its really a political move at its core. In a way I'm proud of the league, but I also don't think its 100% genuine. I think Silver wanted this to happen and made it known to the owners and Prokorov stepped up to get in Silver's good graces.

What other 7' guys are out there?

Collins never put up great stats, but managed to start a few seasons for the Nets when they had Carter and Kidd and went deep in the playoffs.

FWIW, I've seen his name mentioned a lot in articles discussing teams' possible big man signings.

A former Nets "hero" signed by the Nets who have only vet minimum to sign guys?

Collins is a Joel Freeland type 5, role player who is a good defender and sets good screens

    0 points, 1 rebound, 11 minutes, 5 fouls

Gay or straight, he's still not a good player.

The Nets gave him a 10-day contract.

That's why I think it's kind of tacky. I think it's a little cheesy that he suddenly gets a job during the NFL combine, while Sam is getting all the attention.

    It's still vet minimum. Pro-rated.

Ah, didn't understand what you meant. What are the odds that he gets a second 10-day deal? Anybody from the stands can commit 5 fouls in 11 minutes and not score.

If he doesn't get another 10 day deal, we'll know it was a total publicity stunt.

Being a Christian I think its embarrassing when Christians jump on any celebrities junk that claims Jesus. I find it equally embarrassing for gays to ride some celebrities jock just because they prefer the dong. It proves you yourself are insecure of your beliefs and need some famous name to make you feel better about yourself.

They can't offer anybody any more than vet minimum because they're massively over the cap and luxury tax threshold.

I don't know if he'll get a 2nd contract or not. What I do know is that when a team is hurting for a big man replacement due to injury/whatever, the list of names always includes his.

I was never a fan. I couldn't figure out why the nets played him so much and why the fans liked him so much. There was no measurable good effect from his play, it seemed. But you can't really measure defense and they were good at defense.

I don't think hiring someone for reasons other than their qualifications is generally a good thing, regardless of whatever political statement some people might want to read into it.

I didn't think he was worth a roster spot, but apparently the Nets do, and they should know what they need better than I do. So I congratulate the guy for extending his dream career. But I don't give a rusty rat's ass if he's gay or the first gay person to do something or whatever.

What's next, are left-handed people with flaming red hair from second marriages going to celebrate when we have our first red-headed step child left handed president?

Come to think of it, they might. ;)

Do you really think this is an apt comparison? Christians are the majority in society and sports (though not all are outspoken like Tebow). There is 1 openly gay male athlete playing in any of the major sports in the US.

This would be bigger news if Collins could actually play. The way it is, it is a mere token. No substance. It will be news when the first gay "player" actually "plays" in the NBA. Kingspeed could commit 5 fouls in 11 minutes.

What's your point? Who gives a shit what sort of decisions he's made in his personal life? It's like making a big stink about the first vegan to play football, I don't care.

And it is an apt comparison, both are lifted up by their like minded peers as some sort of hero, like their beliefs ride on whether or not this guy fails. I could give a rats ass about Tebow being a Christian, sure I'm glad if he is born again that he won't go to hell but he's not some hero of the faith for playing football any more than I am not a hero of the faith for being a security guard.

People seem really stuck on having "the first (insert ethnic or sexual orientation or gender) to do something". We saw it with Obama, but the fact that his race was a big deal to so many just proves we are still a bunch of racist idiots.

I can't tell from your quote if you're referring to Tebow or Collins. Please clarify. Are you referring to Tebow's choice to be Christian or Collins' "choice" to be gay?

2 rebounds but you didn't watch the game. He set screens that led to scores. He took a charge. He had some tips out to his teammates. He played decent defense. He was very effective in helping them win the game.
