One of my favorite Canzano moments was during the Oregon/Lyles "scandal." Canzano was on ESPN's Outside the Lines as some sort of insider on the major punishment coming Oregon's way. When he appeared on the screen during his segment, the writing underneath his face identified him as John "Calzano." I still laugh thinking about it.

Another great moment was when Calzano hi-jacked the 2012 Pac-12 media day by continually pestering Chip Kelly about Will Lyles. This was after Chip had answered "I can't discuss it as the NCAA case continues" 4 or 5 times already by other writers. The best part was that Calzano dragged his wife down to LA for media day and made her film him trying to goad Chip into a reaction. The only reaction he got were groans from the other assembled media who were wondering who this douchebag from Oregon was who kept interrupting the press conference.

    He's such a choad.

I like how Chad Doing sometimes refers to him as John Cazizno. I think a a caller made that reference to him once.

Wow, for $25 you can go bowling with Canzano.

It would be almost worth it to go and heckle the shit out of him. Once you pay your money he really couldn't kick you out.

Dude, we're commissioners for the Blazers forum. There's no way he would dare kick us out. He kicks us out and the Blazers would never let him attend another blazer game.

just like a troll, he doesn't exactly get his facts right. they have 11 #'s retired, but two of them are mostly ceremonial.

While yes they have too many #'s retired, 9 is the actually # of #'s retired (#1 has been used by players since they honored Weinberg with it, and 77 isn't exactly a common # in the NBA now-a-days anyway).

And even if it was 11, that argument is about 9 years old

    From Pete on Damian Lillard:
I am a faithful reader of your column and you are a great sports writer. With that said why are you being so hard on Damian? He is a 2nd year guy i'm excited we have on our team and he is doing a great job in my opinion.I'm sure at his age and being as good as he is he has a little cockiness when dealing with certain people, but please don't mistake confidence as cockiness and please cheer this kid on instead. We need him and a couple more players like him in my opinion. Thanks Pete
Thanks for the email. Damian is a very good player. An All-Star. The reigning Rookie of the Year. My point this week is that we have a curious and small-minded habit in this market of overvaluing our players, elevating their profile before they've truly achieved. We give standing ovations for decent performances, or simply for a player checking into his first game (See: CJ McCollum), the Blazers have 11 retired jersey numbers (more than the Bulls/Spurs combined). And Lillard is a prime example of this. He's very, very good. But if he wants to be great he needs to improve on the defensive end of the floor, and limit his inefficient nights offensively. Maybe he doesn't want to hear it. Maybe his biggest fans don't either. But it's the truth. Lillard, and most of his teammates, have won nothing yet. Let's save the parade until after the title run. He took a funny passive-aggressive shot at me this week via twitter, but I like the guy. I like, most of all, that nothing on the court happens faster on offense than Lillard wants it to happen. Nothing is a big deal to him. His reaction this week might be the best defense he's played all season.

So it's not Lillard that Canzano is complaining about it's how much the fans love Lillard that he doesn't like.

Oh, and Lillard is passive aggressive and he hurt little Johnny's feelings.

That's what I was going to say. Canzano's response to the negative response to his rants about how mediocre and pedistrian he thinks Lillard is, is that, "Hey, I'm not complaining about Lillard, I'm complaining about all the small-minded idiots in Portland who read my column, listen to my show, and follow the Blazers. Why can't you idiot fans be smart like me?"

    Apology accepted.

You're right. Canzano would never stand up and cheer for a rookie who is coming off an injury and playing in his first game. I guess smart fans would have booed CJ McCollum.

If only we could be as big-minded and sophisticated as our resident columnist.

Reading this answer to the question, I'm more convinced than ever that he has outgrown us. I'll weep in my pillow at night, but clearly he needs to move on to a larger city that will better appreciate his talents.

He's not moving for many years. His daughter lives here and while his wife is a good TV reporter I don't think she is big city TV good. Which must make things a joy in the Canzano household, "I could be a big shot in NY or LA if it wasn't for you two holding me back!"

Basically, John is knocking the fan base. A fan base that many players (including opposing players), coaches, and analysts praise as one of the most rabid and fanatical fan bases in the NBA. We supposedly have one of the best in-game atmospheres in the league. John has widely praised it numerous times.

So... now, he's changed his mind and is essentially bashing us for this? Makes sense. So, which is it John? Are we idiots for being so attached to our team? Or are we one of the best fan bases in the league? Dude has to do something to stir the pot. As mentioned, he's pretty much faded into obscurity over the last year. I don't really remember anyone talking about him or hearing his name for the last several months now, until this.
