    On the morning of September 11, 2001, some time around 9:10, in front of a sign stating "READING MAKES A COUNTRY GREAT", George Bush appeared to be reading the THE PET GOAT story while also listening to it being recited by a group of schoolchildren at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota County, Florida, just after White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informed him that a second airplane had just hit the World Trade Center. Bush remained seated for roughly seven minutes and followed along as the children read the book.

    I lived in occupied Tokyo. McArthur had ordered us (yes, dependents too) to bow to the Emperor if we saw him. One time my mother was driving me (women were bad drivers then) and the Emperor's motorcade approached, on his way to whatever business Emperors do--it was not a celebratory procession.

    All cars stopped like nowadays when a siren goes by, but there was a difference (besides no siren). Sitting in your car, do you bow? Mom wasn't sure, so she did repeatedly. She was all flustered (like all women drivers were then--the stereotype was that when in doubt while driving, they stopped and applied makeup, but from my observations, they only did that about half the time) and yelled some fear into me to ensure I wouldn't act like a kid and embarrass her.

    So, the Emp--I mean the Emperor--passes by and we continue to, hell if I know. Commissary, PX, I don't know.

    The bottom line is that you are either master of events or a prisoner to them. It's all about preparation. Once these things begin, if you haven't prepared the ground, you've already lost.

    There's nothing the Obama Administration can do now. They squandered the past year when they could have had an impact.
