So you know I punched out my old laptop. Fine. Well, wifey got a new writing contract and decided to have pity on me and surprised me with a nice new Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 (I have never ued 8 before). It came with virus software loaded.... nice looking unit.

So I started it up and was going thru the on screen step by step instructions just fine and then it said it was now time to click this icon and go to the internet for more instructions... I clicked on the icon and the screen errupted in virus crap. Instantly 60-80 pop ups, flashing red..... Anyway I called Best Buy and they said it probably wasn't repairable and to bring it back. So I did.

    But what the hell!!

It was brand friggin' new! It was loaded with virus protection! I was following the instructions!!

Wifey downloaded Firefox the other day and it delivered a bunch of crippling viruses as well. Fortunately she has access to free help through a publisher and they took about 6 hours to repair it.

I am debating living computer free (except for this work computer I'm sitting at) and they are just worthless.

The biggest problem i see here: She bought a Toshiba.

Those, as well as ASUS computers, suck. I recommend HP. I've had mine for 5 years without getting a single virus.

I was wondering if the virus came in with the news apps it asked me to load. Or, if the hard drive was refurbished when put in the computer.

More likely the hard drive. It would have been better to clean up all files (even those in it's trash can) and have it re-formatted.

I agree about the trash can. Where all computers belong.

It was probably returned by someone else and not checked properly by their geek squad. Ive found that best buy typically has the worse specs available for the computers they sell. Im in the lapt top market right now also, If its not to late check out Leveno they seem to have some great deals right now, also www.dealnews.com and www.bensbargains.net are good tech deal hunter sites.

Laptops suck. This is why you should just buy the most basic laptop for word processing/surfing the web and then build a nice desktop for anything else you might like to do.

Assuming you just need it for word prcessing, e-mail and web browsing then you might as well just get a cheap-ass chromebook for $299. or get a Nexus or Ipad tablet with a bluetooth keyboard.

Anyone here have a Chromebook? I was thinking of picking one up at some point this year. Right now we have a rMBP and and older 13" Macbook that is getting a little long in the tooth. I was thinking that a Chromebook would be a good 2nd laptop that we can take on vacation, my wife can take on work trips and any other light computing we do at home. The charger for the HP one looks interesting, as do the new Samsungs that are supposed to come out soon.

I honestly can't remember the last time I had a computer virus. You must be surfing a lot of porn sites.

I am really on the verge of getting one. My bro has one and loves it. I liked the 14" HP ones but they're $100 more than the acer. The acer just feels cheap though.

The new Samsungs look nice. Just not sure when they come out. They are more though. I think 300 for 11" and 400 for 14", but the specs look nice. Except, I have no clue about the processor. It uses an ARM chip vs an Intel Haswell chip in others like the HPs. Not sure if that is a good thing, bad thing or moot point. I need to do some more research on them.

Its basically for web surfing, don't think you'll need to spend that much on it otherwise you get diminishing returns.

I do like the Mini-USB charging on the HP 11" though. But was leaning towards the 14" due to the extra size. nothing big, just to take to starbucks and write on evernote. I still can't do everything I do on a regular laptop but that's fine.

I'd get the 11", so it'd be 300 (only 25 or so more than the HP). I can't remember the specs, but I think the increase in RAM was the biggest difference. That is what caught my eye since I know that if you have a lot of tabs open, they can slow down. Not sure at what point that starts to happen though.

Big plus is the Google Drive storage + the 12 Gogo Inflight passes.
