Lillard vs Roy - Comparison of first playoff series

He was well spoken and thoughtful, but subdued. Dame has a similar vibe but it's more intense. Plus I feel like Dame is a bigger basketball nerd, which is cool with me.

 

I don't agree with that necessarily, but I can see where you're coming from.

Roy had that squeaky ass voice though. It probably put some people off.

 

I would have liked to have seen B-Roy is this kind of offense. He was a terrific passer. I think he would have thrived in this system.

 

I think Roy was a Tim Duncan type guy. Doesn't care for the spotlight but one hell of a leader.

Dame on the other hand has completely immersed himself into the national AND local spotlight. I get the feeling he is proud to be a Blazer (ex: 1977 hat, yelling RIP CITY after game 6.)

 

I'm not going to judge a guy who was just cut by a team where he had been the leader of it.

I will always love B-Roy as a player. In my mind, he SAVED this franchise. He shut the door on the Jail Blazers, and for that I'll always be grateful.

 

He would be Lance Stephenson with elite level moves in this offense... Scary.

 

Lillard's style of play is just so much more marketable than Roy's. Nice handles and ball control is nice, but he never had that threat of launching a three from practically anywhere, and that can really electrify a game. Plus, the ball just doesn't stick with Lillard out there--he makes decisions quickly and keeps it moving, and when he decides he wants to score the suddenness just jumps out at you. He's just more of a highlight kind of player than Roy.

The comparisons between the two are only natural, but in truth Roy's nearest approximate in the NBA is James Harden.

I still think Joe Johnson is closest player to Roy in style of play.

 

That's tough to say, when all we get is the public persona and don't know how they are regarded in the locker room. My sense is that Roy was never fully comfortable playing the "leader" role and there always seemed to be some friction between he and LaMarcus (and it's tough to forget the way he handled Andre Miller's presence). I think it was tough for him to be thrust into the role of being the franchise savior and having to deal with all of turmoil and baggage that came with the "Jail Blazers" era, Sarge, Zach, the injuries, etc.

I think Damian does seem more at ease with his role on the team and as a leader, but his game also lends itself to an easier relationship with his teammates than Roy had - First of all Stotts runs a real offense and Lillard is not an isolation player like Brandon was. Secondly, he got to come into a situation with an established All-star in LaMarcus with a more stable culture with solid veterans like Wesley and Nicolas.

 

How much of that ball sticking was just Nate ball? At UW, I don't remember a whole lot of ISO ball. Of course, a big part of that was 90% of the offense was just transition baskets. Roy didn't have Lillard's range (who besides Steph Curry does?), but I think his game could have been just as electric. As a personality, Lillard is much more marketable (as someone else said, Roy was like a guard version of Duncan).

Of course, I'm hugely biassed. Roy was the best player at UW while I was there, was drafted by the team I grew up rooting or and then he put the nail in the coffin of the jail blazer era.

 

All that said, I'm not saying I'd necessarily take Roy over Lillard or anything. Just that like a lot of other fans, he has a special spot in my heart.

 

The things people used to say about Roy's personality...... his humility, wise-beyond-his-years, his never-say-die attitude, his calm demeanor...... Those were his strengths. Yet, Lillard takes all of those things to a new level. I think so much of what makes this team work is based not only upon Lillard's abilities on the court, but off of it as well. You think it's coincidence that the "always feeling slighted" LA is playing his best ball next to Lillard? Despite the attention Lillard gets, he continues to defer to LA, call it LA's team, raise him up, as well as the rest of his teammates. Some guys think they need to be boisterous and draw attention to draw the sponsorship deals. But Lillard has figured out that if he lets his gave do his talking, and he continues to pump up his teammates by deferring to them, giving them the credit, he's really only making himself more marketable, and he's building his teammates self-esteem and confidence, which helps them perform better (which helps the team, and again, makes Lillard look better).

I just can't recall another time where I've seen a budding superstar has had so much humility and sense in team as Lillard. For a shooting PG, he's as unselfish as they come. He really is. I know it seems like an oxymoron, but the guy is just so unselfish on and off the court. I get the Roy comparisons, as we all wanted Roy to do what Lillard is now doing. But Lillard is all that and a bag of chips. And as many similarities are there are, there are a lot of differences between the types of ball these two play.

Before Friday's game, my dad and I spent a lot of time discussing Dame, what he means to the city, the Blazers, how he plays the game both on and off the court. We both feel like we're witnessing something great with Dame. Perhaps a HOF career. Perhaps even more. We're eager to find out, but at the same time, we want to enjoy enjoy moment of what we're witnessing. And then the shot happens.........

 

Personality wise, Damian is the anti-Westbrook. It makes me so proud because I think he'll be every bit as talented as RW, but his attitude makes him the better player right now.

 

Exactly. RW is exactly who I was thinking of when I was talking about Lillard being the opposite of the typical, boisterous, look-at-me types.

Lillard has been in the NBA less, but he already has bigger deals than RW. And it's because there's much more to Dame than his personal on-court performance.
