I can only go by history.

    Darko - 1 title
    Anthony - 0 titles

They both played the same this year in the playoffs, too, so that's a tie.

I don't think Houston would've been mocked, because they went to the Finals in 86, and most likely would've gone to the finals in those two years anyways.

And Hakeem was arguably one of the best Cs in the game for most of the 80s and 90's, whereas Bowie wasn't.

I'm only saying that passing up a guy who won 8 titles for a great C who won 0 titles should be in a bad pick conversation. The Greatest Player Ever who won 8 straight titles over a great center. Alas, it's Imaginary Draft Land stuff.

So Oden is #2 when they acknowledge his potential and bad luck, yet Brown and Candy are #3 and #4 when most saw those as big risks based on the fact those were guys that didn't do much (until they showed potential and their physical characteristics were reviewed during draft work outs)? Makes sense. Not.

Oden was clearly a bust. But their analysis makes little sense for those three positions. Brown and Candy were simply stupid picks. Oden's busted-ness is simply due to bad luck (despite the fact some thought this fate would be his - the talent was there).

But because of his potential, wouldn't that make him ultimately the bigger bust? Regardless of circumstances, you could be 10, but you're 1. Whereas those 2 could have been a 6, 7, maybe 8, but they were a 1, 2.

    Bigger bust? Yes.

But did you not read the headline title of the article? It says "worst draft picks". Overreaching for shit picks is worse than drafting a dude with loads of potential that busts due to injury, no? At least Oden had potential worthy of his draft slot. No?

The Respert pick got traded to Minnesota for Gary Trent and a future #1. Respert never was a Blazer. It's like blaming Pritchard for drafting Randy Foye or Tyrus Thomas.

Yes, but the database searches only by the team that drafted them, not by the team that played them the most.

12/8 per 36, and his numbers in the second half of the season were pretty decent.

AND he had Mike Brown as a coach

Exactly. Oden is not even remotely close to being one of the worst draft picks in NBA history. Not even top 100 worst draft picks in history. Probably not top 300. He was a sure-fire no-brainer top 2 draft pick. His play on the court proved it. Now, if he'd had three microfractures and played 30 games in a 4 year college career BEFORE the draft, then yeah, it would have been a bad draft pick.

    Exactly. Just like the
'best' lists. When people do these lists, they are heavily biased towards their own current era or decade.

The article was only about #1 overall picks; Bowie was a #2.

Meyers Leonard was 10/11 per 36, and had a higher PER than Bennett. Nice argument.

    More numbers:

    WS/48

    Bennett -.028
    Leonard +.086

    Ortg/Drtg

    Bennett 85/107
    Leonard 104/105

Yes, this is where NBA knowledge comes into the equation. I knew Respert was traded for Trent. I also know Respert never played a second for the Blazers.

I'd have to call Tyrus Thomas a worse pick, based on your criteria.
