The number one reason why he would not select a market like SLC or Portland is the reason why LA's representatives were once trying to get moved to a larger market. Endorsements. In LeBrons case the loss he would take.
Now I've really lost it. Checked lebrons twitter and who he follows. He only follows around 200 ppl and Lillard and aldridge are both on the list (so is dorell but that's not significant). What if lebron was really one of the guys that told those two he'd want to go play with them in Portland?
Talk shows all day long we're saying the opposite. That he is the one player in all of sports that transcends a small market. He makes his money regardless.

LeBron is an international brand. Doesn't matter where he plays, he is going to get all kinds of endorsements. He doesn't need to worry about getting gigs pitching for suburban Portland car dealerships.
He can host Saturday morning cartoons. Rambling Bron. He could show that video of Jordan thanking Portland for not drafting him and tell MJ to suck it after the Blazers sweep the finals.

It's why I laugh when people question why in the world lebron would take a paycut to go somewhere else. He's going to be a billionaire one day..and not from his basketball earnings.
Anyone ever see Chris bosh on commercials? Why do I see Durant from okc more than I see carmelo from ny? Why don't I see anyone from the nets? I think this sort of thinking made sense in a localized sort of world 25 years ago or so. Now, guys are going to make so much nationally, anything local is a pittance.
The big markets give big local advertisements. The biggest LA has gotten in Portland was reported as 125k for some car commercial. Lee was rumored to get a multi million deal for a local advertisement when he was in NY.
It'd be interesting to see the total amount he received in endorsements in Cleveland vs. Miami. He became the most hated athlete in America with that move.
I heard about this Damian Lillard guy who plays for Portland. Supposedly got a pretty good shoe deal. Imagine.

I highly doubt some local car company or what not is paying 2 million plus for David Lee to advertise for them.
It wasn't car companies with Lee, it was Vitamin Water and Right Guard. Lee was actually a big name when he was in New York.
