The Pelicans could easily not make the playoffs.
The Rockets could easily NOT land Melo/Bosh (? no one has mentioned him going there) and losing Asik makes them worse.
Livingston isn't what the Warriors need. He helps, but so did Mo Williams help Portland. he wasn't what they needed.
Memphis no being injury prone isn't a team that "is getting better" via off season trades of signings.
OKC lost a starter and has a horrible center in Perkins and an overrated guy in Gomez Adams.

I think people are overstating how good Spencer is.

Stats vs Kaman (not that I'm a huge fan of Dober)

PPG 13.5 (in 30 minutes) vs 10.5 (in 19 minutes).

    RPG 7.7 vs 6

    Blocks: 1 vs 1

    PER was a wash too.

Sure, Spencer is a better 3 point threat, but that's not what the team should get. They need someone who is actually in the paint once in a while.

Also, if you go per 36's, Kaman is 20-11 whereas the grass is greener, er I mean, Spencer, he was 16 and 9. But hey, Spencer was the Harrison "Fucking" Barnes of this off season.

I for one was okay with the Kaman signing because I felt Hawes would go for more than the MLE. I now feel I am wrong. If Olshey passed on Hawes because he demanded 4 yrs, and Olshey wanted to keep CAP flexibility next year, then I think that is the wrong course of action. Hawes is in the prime of his career. LAC got a solid player for a very reasonable contract. We lost out on that one.

Adrian Branch was more recent a Laker to Blazer.

I agree. For next year, stats may show that these two are about a wash. Kaman may have the slight advantage if he stays healthy. Kaman may also be a better fit since he plays more of an inside game. However, Hawes is only 26 and Kaman is 32. I'm disappointed that we couldn't have invested in the future and had Hawes locked up for 4 years. Kaman is essentially just a stop gap for next year. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But when you have an opportunity to find a young talent for the same price, I think we should have pounced on it.

Let's just say the market doesn't seem to be as inflated as folks were projecting.

@WojYahooNBA: Hawes passed on Blazers MLE offer Thursday, sources say. Chose between Clippers MLE and Suns space. Blazers moved on, signing Chris Kaman.

Still incomplete info since technically Kaman's deal is also an MLE.

I still like signing Kaman. Just would have preferred Hawes even with more years.

I'd like to see how many years Neil offered Spencer.

I actually prefer the short term signing of Kaman because Meyers may develop and Marc Gasol or Brooke Lopez may be available next summer and I really want the Lopez twins splitting the post duties here.

Last three times we have had cap space it yielded players near MLE levels. With Gasol having strong Memphis ties, I would be shocked if he left for any other team.

That's my attitude now. Only reason I wanted the red neck was because Olshey made him a priority. Now I'm back to couldn't care less about the him.

Hope his demeanor in locker room causes tension in the clipper locker room. Oh and fuck the clippers.

Other than that, wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th! :)

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I'm not entirely sure how Spencer Hawes became the "it" free agent this year (MAYBE some people put LeBron James ahead of him). Slight exaggeration, but the deep lust around the NBA and among fans for Hawes seems a tad overdone. Is it purely because he shot 41.6% from three-point range last year? If that was what he always did, I could understand it, since stretch big men are hugely valued these days. But that looks like a massive outlier compared to the rest of his career. He's also a mediocre rebounder for a center and nothing special defensively.

I'd prefer Kaman for the coming season. Over the next 4 years, I'd prefer Hawes due to age, but I'd rather neither one on a four-year deal.

How is it incomplete info? It's complete, we signed Kaman for the MLE. What's the problem?

In his 11 seasons, Kaman has played >66 games in only Seasons #1, 3, 4, and 7. Last year, 39 games, was exactly average for 3 of his last 4 seasons (32+47+39, divided by 3 years, = 39). It was not an off-season for him as portrayed by the L.A. media; it was typical.

The real challenge will be who can spin this as a poor job by Olshey AND that big name free agents will never come to Portland?

The key here is you have to do BOTH spin jobs, not just the one.
