Difference so far has been Chip called plays as HC... Frost was calling them as OC last year.

One had the pulse of the game and the other didn't.

Did Chip not have his pulse on the game during the 2011 season, when Oregon had its lowest 4th down percentage of the last five years?

How about in 2007, when he was calling plays?

2008, which was the lowest of the last 7 years at 40%, or the Kelly era, as we can call it?

Oregon was 15/31 last year, which was better than 3 out of the 6 years Chip called plays. Basically, Helfrich was smack dab in the middle of what Kelly did each season on 4th down.

one went from getting feet wet and calling plays as an OC and the other did not

fwiw I dont think anyone is arguing that Helfrich is Chip. I'm simply responding to the thought on how Chip could improvise and call plays and Helf cant.

I don't understand why there is this sentiment of either/or regarding Chip and Helfrich. It's possible to enjoy the ride that Chip started without trashing Helfrich, yet on many Duck boards, it's a divisive issue. Chip chose to leave Oregon a year after he almost chose to leave Oregon. He also got the Ducks on NCAA probation, which Helfrich has had to deal with in recruiting (such as all UO coaches must tell PSAs that UO is on probation) for the last two season. How quickly people forget.

Well, NS, you're the touchy one. But I like Chip & Helfrich equally well. Chip was a genius. Helfrich is a good coach.

I didn't comment on you at all or your emotions. I was relaying my thoughts on a division in the Duck fanbase, and I also added statistics showing that Chip definitely wasn't a "genius" every season regarding 4th down percentage. The statistics say Chip had 3 better 4th down seasons than Helfrich, and 3 worse seasons. Hopefully Helfich improves on that statistic in year 2, but he already beat Chip's first two seasons in terms of calling successful 4th down plays.

There are many teams whose fans have high expectations. For Duck fans - it is a relatively new experience.

That's a good point. I used to hope for wins and now I expect them. I hope we don't turn into Oklahoma type fans.

Unfortunately as we see on this board and elsewhere, some Duck fans are completely full of... expectations. I guess winning attracts/breeds that sort of over the top entitlement, but I've got history following the program and still appreciate where they are because of where they were.

I'm old enough to remember when if UO had only 2 wins for the year, and they were agaist UW & OSU that the spring & summer had us walking around with big smles.

I personally think Chip didn't use our TE's the way he should... There was no answer for Colt and his YAC yards were fierce.. I think many will be surprised how good a coach Helfrich will be! On a side note if Frost wants a HC spot any time soon and it seems the national media is on his scent, he better call a great year this year or if not Frost may want to learn a bit more before heading back to Nebraska for a second go around. I would also suggest Lubick may be the best OC in training the Ducks have had in a long time!

It seemed that way to me as well.
