Maybe Im not familiar with those kinds of contract. Why even sign a contract and why would it be a year?

Non-guaranteed contract == training camp fodder. You can't have players participating in training camp or preseason unless they are under contract. It's non-guaranteed so they are free to cut him before they need to get down to the 15-player limit. BNM
No need for a trade. When the time comes, we can just waive LaMarcus to get down to the 15-player limit. BNM
Thanks for the info guys. Repped. Should have realized that. I just didnt remember signing a bunch of camp players.
Contracts have to be for 1 year min. Since it's non-guaranteed, Southerland gets a loooooong shot chance of making the team & Blazers get another player for camp. I believe Southerland also gets a "bonus" of $10K-$15K that he gets to keep since he will not be seeing the rest of the money.
I guess my confusion was if all players get this or just the ones that they think may have an outside shot as basically insurance
Sorry, I have fond memories of watching Zendon Hamilton play during the preseason. As my dear friend EnglandDan so eloquently put it, "Every time I saw Jamaal Magloire doing something right, it turned out to be Zendon Hamilton."
Perhaps we're taking a look at him in the event a trade or injury and we want to sign him to a 10-day or 30-day contract. SA does such things.
