So the DLP TV the wife and I have had for nearly eight years died last night. Even though all I'd probably have to do is put in a new $40 lamp, the wife is tentatively on board with getting a new tv. I'm looking for the best brand and model in the 55"-65" arena. 4k TV's are too pricey, so I'm looking for 1080p either LCD or plasma. I know the pros and cons of each, so I'm looking for the best in both genres. I'm not concerned about apps because I have an HTPC connected, so I'm looking purely for picture quality for both TV and movies (sports included). I'll worry about price after I see what the best options are. Thanks for the help.
The Samsung i got last year has a much better picture than my old Sony, but of course the Samsung is a 1080p and 7 years newer than my 720 Sony. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN50E...1408826416&sr=1-1&keywords=Samsung UN50EH5300
I went looking today and found the Samsung Plasma PN60F5300AFXZA and the Samsung LED UN60H6203 to be the front runners. The plasma was noticeably dimmer, but less pixelated and less CG looking.

I have a sony kdl-55W900A which is a 55 inch led and I really like it. My suggestion: Wait a few months until Black Friday, dealing with the lines sucks, but getting a TV damn near half off doesn't.
What kind of lighting where the tv is? I don't keep up on tv anymore but recently saw that some were saying the last Panasonic plasmas before they went out of production were amazing. It sucks that a shittier tv has won the market it is what it is. I like my Panasonic LED in my living room because it gets more light. The cheaper 720p Samsung plasma in my bedroom looks waaaay better. I almost got seasick watching movies on the LED the first few times but I am used to it. Any decent tv today is just amazing.
My last 2 TVs were year old open box deals from BestBuy. They have been absolutely perfect for almost half off!
Translation.......I have one and wouldn't admit there are better tvs on Earth..... to keep my baller status on point.
It's in the living room. There's a sliding glass door with one of those plastic panel curtains only about 4 feet away. But even with them open a little, as long as they're angled the opposite direction of the tv, there's no light actually hitting the screen.
The DLP I'm replacing was a Best Buy open box. I don't think I got anywhere close to half off, but it was significant savings, plus I had some kind of coupon for a percentage off an open box item, so that helped too. The plasma I'm considering was selling for $800 new and $720 for the open box one, so not must of a savings.
Then I would look at everything but check out the 8500 series Samsung plasmas. Just read good stuff about them...haven't seen one.
I was reading the reviews on the 8500 on Amazon and it sounds like it's a beefed up version of the 5300. 3D, Smart apps, and probably some quality improvements as well. Since I don't care about 3D or built in apps, I was trying to avoid the premium price for those things and still get a great quality picture.
I would read avs forum if you haven't. I spend more time reading mountain bike forums now. TV helped me get gigantic. Costco is a great idea, you might just want thd biggest tv you can afford/make room for.
