Police use of military equipment. Isn't that strictly a State issue?

I gather Obama does not seem to think it is or I am not sure what this revue is about.

I think one of the prime forces in creating this Nation was the freedom of State to govern as fits their population. One of the principles concepts in making that idea work is the right of the people to vote with their feet. Your are free to go live where they run things more to your liking. That only works if the Federal government sticks to the role assigned to it by the Constitution. and leaves the States to their job, as stated again in the 10th amendment.

I like the idea of voting with your feet. I have done so.

Obama seems to have Ferguson in mind here with this revue and perhaps the Black people in particular. I also see that it is said that only 20% of them voted in the last election. And only 1.5% of the police are black when the population is 67% Black. It seems like they may not be voting in all the ways they can. But I may be missing the point, I am not sure they even want police or they want police with no arms? Is that not about the same as no police?

    It's a federal program.

This is in today's paper, http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-n...n_police_agencies_have_mo.html#incart_m-rpt-1

Very interesting read. There is a lot of equipment that I can't see a police department needing.

True it is a Federal program but I don't think the Feds are in anyway saying what the locals should do with it. No, much of the stuff is of little use to a Cop. But it does seem to me that that is indeed the call of locals. The Obama's revue now seem totally out of place. I mean why junk a Humvy if the Sheriff of Puma can use it even if you want him walking because you don't want him arresting illegals? Just another case of the guy stepping out of bounds again.

Did you read the article you posted?

The review will be led by White House staff and relevant U.S. agencies — including the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice and Treasury — and will be carried out in coordination with Congress, the official said.

I'm not seeing a problem with a review. Do we need our police to be militarized? That's a discussion that needs to be going on in many communities along with the federal government.

What role do you see for the Federal government in reviewing the police departments of what ever city? Other than Washington DC, every city is a part of a State and States can have different ways of doing things.
Some may be better than others and that is to be expected. Perhaps one can learn from the other but I don't see a role in that by the feds nor do I see it mentioned anywhere in the Constitution other than perhaps
    the 10th amendment.

When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail. By militarizing our police they view their jobs more as soldiers and less as officers of peace. But if they want these things to assure their safety, I totally understand that point of view, I might feel the same way in their position. I think the best solution is let them have their tanks, but make every officer have to wear cameras at all times when on duty. That should keep them from abusing their power.

Fine, stick a camera on them. But somehow I think the same loud mouths would be spinning just like they are now. I bet the cop didn't do damn thing wrong but miss with his first shot..

I really find it difficult to understand when people are burning down the town, shooting out windows a looting the businesses, and then bitch about the police getting rough trying to stop it.
Wait a day and get back at it the next night. Then the Nations leader wants a review of their equipment obtained from the Feds. Holly Hell, that is when it is time to vote with your feet.

No one said anything about reviewing police departments. The review is about what the military is giving police departments.

And you chose Oregon? Peculiar choice given that you seem to disagree with most everything that happens here...

If people think people protesting in Ferguson is solely about this one incident, they better think about it again.

The people of Ferguson feel they are occupied by a military force of white people who make their lives miserable enough of the time.

The killing was just enough to trigger the revolt.

Ha! Now that is putting a fine line under the motive. Well I will wager that result will not expand the program because they favor how it has been used.

The stuff is surplus, it has been declared surplus!!! WTF is to review about that?

What is being made available to police departments. There are already many things not being made available. Police departments can't get many weapons and things that are surplus.

Hey man! You could get on with Al Sharpton slinging that sort of shit.
That is really insightful pointing to all the white people that go out of their way to make the people of Ferguson miserable. Fuck man that is a scoop.
