Police use of military equipment. Isn't that strictly a State issue?

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I have the view that it's fine for the federal government to have oversight over military equipment that they provide other organizations within the country.

Spoken like a Federalist of old and Democrat of today. Find a way to ignore the 10th amendment at every opportunity.
I think my local Sheriff or Police Chief is very much more qualified to determine what they can use than anyone in the current Federal administration of any era.

The real review that need to be done is not. The local people don't appear to give a shit, except perhaps to bitch.

    Government

The Mayor of Ferguson is directly elected for a three-year term.[27] Voter turnout in the most recent mayoral election was approximately 12%.[28]
The Ferguson city council is composed of six members.[28]

Obama's review of the surplus equipment provided is irrelevant to the problem in this community.

So your position is that the police should be able to have any and all surplus military equipment they want without any federal or local oversight or review?

I think your local sheriff or police chief is much less qualified to determine whether military vehicles and weapons are suitable for use in urban American environments than the military minds in the federal government.

Yes the State are sovereign to that extent as long as they adhere to the US Constitution. No where did I say police should be without local oversight. The point is exactly the opposite, the oversight should be
local and State, not the Federal government.

Well I take it, that is your opinion. But we do elect Sheriff and the City Mayor and Council select the Police Chief, to do a job for us. We elected Obama to do a job too but not the one we elected the local Sheriff to do. He lacks any qualifications. Perhaps you have noticed?

I agree, but I don't think that job is to determine how to militarize our city. That's outside their purview, in my opinion.

How in the hell can you suggest how the people in any city other than your own run their business? The Constitution lays down the basis right we all have but beyond that the Federal government has no role nor should it.
The people elect the Mayor and the City council who hire the police including the Chief and the buy the equipment. What the hell else do you want???
Step back a notice that only 12% of the people in Ferguson seem to give a shit about this process! I sure as hell don't think OBama can come save their asses with a fucking review! Do you think that will work?
Is the Federal government going to now start paying and directing the Police??? Holy Cow, things will go to shit in rapid fashion.

For the first time in 30 years, a patrol K-9 has joined the ranks of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.
“Neeko,” a 2-year-old black German shepherd, began his duties Monday with human partner Deputy Adam Slater.
Slater, who has spent time with the Bandon Police Department and the Confederated Tribal Police in addition to the sheriff’s office, just returned with Neeko from basic canine training in Virginia.
Neeko’s purchase was enabled by the Bureau of Land Management, whose Coos County lands Slater is assigned to patrol.
“It’s kind of cool how this whole thing came to be,” he said.
The sheriff’s office first approached the federal agency about funding a K-9 program in 2012.
“I ended up testifying before the Resources Advisory Committee,” Slater said.
The committee approved the project, and BLM picked up the $22,000 bill for the dog, K-9 school and operational equipment.

Yeah, but that's different. People on the south coast have a right to be funded by the federal (and state) government, because they don't like paying taxes. But what they do with our money should be totally up to them. They are rugged individualists down there, and don't need any federal nanny state.

I always forget about the sovereign right of cities to arm themselves and maintain a standing army.

You'll remember it better after Cheyenne, Wyoming drops a nuclear device on Washington, DC.

It all sound very cool doesn't it. Bandon has had a K9 unit for quite some time without the federal government paying the bill.
The COOS County Sheriffs department is a bit on the other side of the coin. They get a large part of their funding from the Feds, doing various federal funded projects.
The problem is they have little time to just be the local cops. They are often too busy to be on call for the a normal citizen.
However, they usually have the patrols out issuing seat belt violations, writing enough to keep their federal funding.

Do you see the connection? It's damn near sickening to watch the subversion, the tentacles attaching one by one. They are johnny spot on for that Fed money but the
neighborhood watch can't get a responder for burglary. The locally elected Sheriff sort of lacks the ability to be local instead of a puppet for the feds. Although he insists he will
    when the issue is important.

With a nuclear weapon purchased by federal earmarks designated for their state in Washington DC.

    How deliciously ironic.

How can Obama be allowing my tax dollars to be paying for k-9 :MARIS61:

The irony if a republican president cuts funding to agencies such as BLM so they in turn stop programs that send K-9 to local law enforcement.

In fact it is Rick Perry that right away would do away with three agencies of government if he were president commerce, education and . . . . . and . . . and. . . .uh . . . .uh . . . uh

    Department of Interior?
