... nice to see a star player unconcerned with money and with his priorities in perspective and where fans would like to see them; "Miguel Cabrera is putting his money where his mouth is. The Detroit Tigers first baseman opted against signing the paperwork necessary to make him eligible for his playoff bonus, USA Today Sports reported. Miguel Cabrera would rather have a World Series ring than a playoff bonus, according to a report. According to the newspaper, Cabrera was sitting at his locker Wednesday when teammate Max Scherzer came around collecting signatures from the team. "I'm not signing anything," Cabrera told Scherzer. Designated hitter Victor Martinez, who had just signed the paperwork, had a conversation with Cabrera in Spanish. Cabrera maintained his position, concluding by saying: "I just want the ring." Scherzer, who also had tried to talk with Cabrera, finally shrugged and walked away. "OK, more for us," he said. A full share of the postseason bonus for players on last year's World Series-winning Boston Red Sox team was worth $307,000. Portions of the bonus also are allocated to support staff such as clubhouse attendants. Cabrera signed a 10-year contract worth nearly $292 million with the Tigers last offseason. He has won two straight MVP awards -- but just one World Series ring, back in 2003. The Tigers open their 2014 playoff hunt Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS."
I got really pi@@ed when Scherzer turned down the contract Detroit offered him, the man seemed like an ingrate and especially in Detroit which has been hard hit with economic problems. Along with Cabrera dissing the bonuses and working for a ring is commendable. The Fans in Detroit no doubt appreciate Cabreras actions and would love to see a championship come to Detroit.
...Scherzer needs to be dominant in the PS to win the favor of Tigers fans as well as management and possible FA suitors.
Incredible news 59, thanx for sharing as much. I hadn't heard this great news yet. Now that is a Winner's attitude, the stuff legends are made of....!
____________________________________ Agree. He turned down something like 150 mil - and this was with a month or more left in the season. This is what you get with players who already multi-millionaires. Maybe he wants out of Detroit and wants to play closer to "home"...not sure but in any case, he wasn't too concerned with the possibility of sustaining an injury to his pitching arm. Most definitely a pukeface ingrate. Talk about being spoiled! And because he ALREADY is well off and "rich",(don't forget that monstrous pension) - It would've brought a little smile to my face if he DID get a pain in his pitching arm right after he turned down the offer. Same goes for the rest of Max Scherzers of MLB. Just to bring them back to the real world for a while.
He says now he was only joking,http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/201...iguel-cabrera-detroit-tigers-was-joking-bonus
