as much as the "SABR rattlers" hate to admit there is such a thing, being "clutch" is a real thing. some pitchers just dont have the stones for the big lights.

there is no way IMO that kershaw shitting the bed in the playoffs is just a random thing. its been proven over and over again.

postseason last two years- 0-4, 19 runs allowed in 22.2 innings

^^^yeah, tote and I had quite a back and forth about whether or not Scherzer was being greedy or not by turning down the Tigers' offer...and whether or not he was talking a big gamble or not by opting to test the FA market vs taking the sure $24 Mil per year from the Tigers.

Right now, at this moment - I'm sure the Giants are quite satisfied with Bumgarner, considering salary, and post season performance.

As for Koufax making light work of Mantle - he sure made light work of plenty of hitters especially during the World Series...but The Mick also took Koufax downtown during the fall classic.
Mantle also hit a large HR off Gibson in the '64 Series.

How many hitters can say they hit home runs off Koufax and Gibson in back-to-back World Series?

Mantle he didn't have 18 career WS HRs facing stumble bums. lol

...I remember listening to that game on the radio when I was a kid...wasn't that the same game that Ken Boyer hit a GS that beat the Yanx in the final game?...I remember being devastated over it...and probably cried, and I know I did in '60...Mantle said he did after that Series too.

No way in holy hell will you ever hear me putting down the Mick. I was fortunate to obtain one of his Gamer Spec bats, ordered directly from Louisville Slugger. I attended the last Memorabilia Show in Disneylands Convention Center in 85 to obtain Mick's autograph on that bat, and a great classic 8X10 of Mick, Kneeling in the On Deck Circle.

I took my Son's, Brother, Father and Wife to see Clemens pitch in Anaheim. It was off of Clemens, that Reggie hit the Home Run to break the MIck's record. 1 month later with the Yanx in Town. Mick presented Reggie with the trophy you will see in the pic below. The true highlight of that game, was doing my customary sitting in my seat, til there was No one but grounds crew in the stands. It paid off big time, as we entered the approx 50 foot or more long walk thru the entrance-exit, we had but small talk with The Mick. I told my Son's, don't bother him too much, he gets bothered enough like it is.

The killer, was MIck walked to his awaiting Limo, bout 30 feet away. Security kept fans off of him, who wanted to engulf him. Mck got in his Limo, and was sitting in the back, with the Limo going nowhere. Inside Mick had taken a note pad full of paper, and signed his name. His window came down just enough to reach his hand out and allow his fans to take one.

Yes, 1 and only 1 SOB grabbed the entire handful of autographs and ran like hell,.

MIck would not sign round objects after that show, his last signing round balls, bats, helmets, you name it.

Even much luckier, look up the Donruss Highlights for the 86 season, printed as the 87 set.

In 4 WS games Bumgarner has thrown 31 innings, giving up only 1 earned run, striking out 27 while going 4-0 with a WS record ERA of 0.29 & a WHIP of .0565

On MIck vs Koufax and Gibson.... IMO, Fans, Pitcher, Mgr. et al. all knew on any given pitch Mick can drive any ball downtown. However in that 1963 World Series vs Koufax and those fkn Bums. Mick went 1-7 off of Koufax. Mick was 2-16 off of the other Bums Pitchers. Mick hit 1 HR in the entire 63 Series, but did not come out smelling like a rose, with a 2 hit performance....during the entire Series. Mick's B'Avg sadly .133

tho we all knew and believed if anyone could win a game with a HR, it was the Mick, the player who foremost had kids believe in dreams Yanx Glory, and MLB are made of...

Not to ever detract from any of these 3 great players, including Marichal, Roberts, Lonborg, Sudden Sam McDowell, L. Tiant

Marichal and Sudden Sam- two of my favorites (amoung others).

El Tiante had one of the greatest all-time years for a pitcher in '68
    Overlooked - and forgotten !

Sam McDowell would make hitters ill --- the night before!
My Gosh, those '68 Indians had Sudden Sam, Tiant (and Sonny Seibert) on the same staff.
The problem was, the Tribe scored 516 runs,
    with 75 HRs and a slash line of - .234/ .293/.327 Yikes!
