i ate at Montage for the first time when I was in Portland the other week. The mac and cheese with buffalo chicken sauce was pretty dope. Went to Thien Hong twice. dopeness.
oh yeah, I ate at Pok Pok wing at PDX. Not bad but the Brick and Mortar is better. can't beat the speed. oh yeah, Blue Star donuts was dope as well.
I ate at Montage around 1998-2000 I think. Had biscuits and gravy or something. Still a thing in Portland? Thought it was awesome.
Its new orleans themed I guess. Went for late night eats, where its popular. I live in the burbs so its always in the opposite direction, we'd end up at Shari's. I liked it Oh yeah, Veriatable Quandry is having problems. The city voted to take the land they are leasing to VQ which is the patio and turn it into a courthouse. VQ owner doubts he can survive with that arrangement. wtf.
For those in the San Diego area - Q'ero in Encinitas, CA is the best Peruvian restaurant I ever sampled - I like it much more than Anadina in NW Portland (which is still pretty good).
I've been stuck in a rut recently. I've been to Imperial like 7 times in the past month. One day I was there for dinner, then back for lunch the next day. I do enjoy that restaurant, though. Been to Bar Avignon a few times recently, as well. Same with Raven & Rose. Probably the most interesting restaurant I've tried for the first time in the past two months has been Levant. The lamb was off the hook. Their brussel sprouts in lamb bacon...... Cha-ching! Money.
When I first turned 21, and everyone was at the clubs dancing and all that lame shit...... VQ is where you'd find my bud and I. We'd be there all night, 3-4 nights per week. The bartender would let us stay and mellow out after closing until the crew was about to leave and lock up for the night. Still go there at least once per month, but more in the summer, if for no other reason than to sit out on that patio.
Are you watching Top Chef this year? The chefs from Departure and Imperial are doing pretty well and still in it. I know Doug, the chef from Imperial has the items he's made on the show on the menu (PBR braised pork or whatevz)
I'm not watching, but I know Doug is on there. Nice guy, met him a time or two. We do a fair amount of business with Imperial, so I tend to eat there a lot. Solid restaurant, and I'm a fan of Portland Penny Diner, too. (Also, a big, big fan of Paley's Place, all three restaurants are owned by the same dude.)
I ate at Departures over thanksgiving, not really a fan of it. As someone who eats a lot of asian food, the asian food geared towards white people palates isn't really my thing. Hope he gets to open up a more adventerous restaurant in Portland.
Taste of Szechuan in Beaverton (on Cornell where the Marie Calendars used to be) is really good. Last time we went we were just about the only white people there.
Yeah, I'll check it. My family doesn't really like spicy-ish foods. We went to China-Town restaurant on Murray Road/Walker. It was dim sum and some seafood, it was ok, a little overpriced I think.
Best place in town was Spicy World, but they closed down. I had a co-worker from China who knew all the great places; she introduced me to both places.
Have you been to Ocean City in SE for dim sum? That place is bomb, and always filled with Chinese people, so you know it's legit.
Nope. My fam doesn't really like goign on the Eastside (except for Thien Hong). Also, the Dim Sum in LA is really solid so I don't really try to seek it out when I'm there, only when family forces me to come along, family meetups tend to be Chinese and at lunch, DimSum and my whole fam lives in Beaverton/Hillsboro/NW Portland.
How's the food at Punch Bowl Social? I went there for drinks, nice spot, but I don't think it can survive, shit was mad empty.
Yeah, its pretty good but overpriced for the quality of meats. I've been to other chains for this, and they were way better. At least the one in LA, they kind of "mailed it in".
Y'all missing out. Ocean City is legit. It's one of the best places in the Portland Metro Area for dim sum. I often see some of the more well-known Portland Chinese figures at Ocean City (some are friends, who turned me on to Ocean City).
