No he wasn't and now he never will be. Bottom line is that scoring gets you paid. Bruce Bowen was one of the greatest defensive players ever, but never made more than the MLE. Dennis Rodman was also an all-time great defender and led the NBA in rebounding for 7 straight seasons yet made less than $5mil in every season but one. Rudy Gay has always been a better scorer than Deng, though for many years, the difference wasn't great. For the past year in Sacramento, Gay has been a solid and efficient 20+ ppg scorer. Importantly, he seems willing to spend the prime of his career in Sacto. Looks like a marriage made in heaven. God bless us everyone.
I look at the names you list and see one dimensional players. Being one dimensional does not get you paid, unless you're Ben Wallace, Kirk Hinrich, or Keith Bogans. Bogans got paid as part of a salary ballast situation. Ben Gordon was a great scorer. He got paid less than Lu. So, FWIW, I always thought Gay was a better player than Lu, and the salaries kind of agree with that. My thinking is you can teach a great scorer to play adequate defense (see DRose). You have a much harder time teaching a great defender to play offense (see ... Rodman).

This feels to me like one of those careful-what-you-wish-for scenarios. The new CBA was designed to induce good players to sign with their preexisting franchises, instead of finding a better situation. Now, it sounds like you may have a superstar wasting away on a terrible team with few prospects for improvement, two months into the season after he signed a five-year deal. Ug.

Understandable. Stephenson looked like a bargain for the Hornets on the surface, but the "intangibles," which all stood against Stephenson, held Stephenson's pricetag down. Those negative intangibles are still in play and may have further reduced Stephenson's market value. My guess is that the Hornets will only be able to move Stephenson if they're willing to hold a true "fire sale."
