Anyone using MS Office Online? The monthly subscription one? Thinking about it, I could get a single version locally on my mac but wondering if the online and ipad versions are any good.

What's wrong with numbers, pages, etc?

I have to do a lot of document sharing, tracking changes with people, collaboration, etc. Word is just easier in that regards. Just gets to be a bitch to always be exporting as word docs, saving two copies in different formats, etc.

Pages is fine for my daily use, but I need word.

Nooooooooooo! Now you've done it, Denny is going to go on and on about how numbers and pages is the best. He'll post a couple of links supporting this. Don't you know by now just to agree with him? You're so screwed.

I like both programs than the MS counterparts, but when you're working with others and sharing documents in dropbox, etc, Office is really a must have.

Office for mac. Costs about $100, I think.

They're not called M$ for nothing.

Yeah, trying to get it for "cheaper" right now. Just was wondering if the $9.99/month version is any good at all.

    Why not use google docs?

In any case, I don't know anything about Office 365, but I do know that they control their browser and that site and can make them work together really well. They might not be able to do the same with chrome or firefox or safari (or want to).

with google docs, i'd run into the same problems as with Pages. Just compatability issues, formatting, etc. I don't mind using multiple programs but having the standard is just easier

I edit in pages all the time, then select all/copy/paste into google docs. It's great.

So the people you share docs with can download as .docx if they must.

Where I work, we use nothing but google docs.

Eh, extra steps plus i work with a lot of people externally, some that aren't exactly the most savvy tech-wise. I have clients that have folders in Dropbox, that I need to go in, edit, they edit, etc. Word is great for that as its the most ubiquitous.

Well, I don't see how the online version of word is going to help you edit docs in dropbox folders.

That kind of settles it, no?

I bought my copy of office on Amazon, FWIW.

BTW, Office gives your Mac that wonderful M$ feel.

It constantly downloads new multi-hundred-megabyte updates to fix security problems in their software and when it updates you have to close all your browsers (at least) for the several minutes it takes to update.

    Bleh.

    re: Office/Dropbox: http://blogs.office.com/2014/11/04/office-dropbox-work-together-phones-tablets-web/

Today we announced a partnership with Dropbox to provide more choice in how you work together and collaborate. You can do more with your Office documents when they are stored online. You can easily share your documents with others, and you can access those files from anywhere, on all your devices. If you use OneDrive and Office together, you already know how easy it is to work online with Office.

Over the coming weeks, we’re updating Office apps so that they work with Dropbox, too. With the next updates to Word, Excel and PowerPoint on iPhone, iPad and Android Phone you’ll be able to connect to your Dropbox account, so you can access, edit and share your Dropbox files right from your Office apps. Once you’ve added your Dropbox account to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, you can navigate folders and files on Dropbox for viewing and editing in the native Office apps. And accessing Word, PowerPoint and Excel from your Dropbox app is just as easy. Navigate to the file you want, and the Dropbox app will open the Office app you need.

Yeah, yeah, I've used Office for Mac for many years. I have a connection at MSFT that may be able to get me a copy of it for cheap. It might just be worth it to pay the $9.99 to use on my ipad, connected to dropbox, etc. Also might get another laptop so the $9.99 license includes 5 computers.

Office for Mac lets you edit in google drive, icloud drive, etc., etc.

The downside is the online version may be more polished and more up to date.

Turn automatic updates off. I've never had security problems, I do update every so often but those popups do get annoying.

You're opening up random documents that could be infected.

    Roulette.
