I have been saying for several years now that the Yankees should hire someone like Ricky Henderson to work with Gardner but nothing. And Gardner continues to be one of the worst so-called base stealers I've ever seen. So what does this have to do with the Whitesox? Well, they've just hired Vince Coleman as there base running instructor.
Right now it is my belief that we are not getting the bang for the buck from the Yankees "braintrust". The Yankees need to get Jeter into that ownership group to maintain some credibility with the fan base. Very embarrassing that the Jurassic Park Trio of Sabathia, A-hole, and Tex have become the Edsels of the franchise, preventing any type of trade movements. I should be proud that the start of this season will mark my 60th year as a fan but this team in my view is not going to fare well unless we witness a major miracle.
What is this obsession with Gardner running bases? Maybe we should call upon the baseball gods to keep him healthy enough to play at least 145 or so games, play good defense, do his thing with the bat and steal 25-35 bases.....the difference between Gardner stealing 25/35 bases and stealing 40-50 bases is not a major factor in the Yankees qualifying for a playoff spot.... IMO Any boarders care to comment? Yes- No ? lol
If you haven't seen the problems with Gardner's base running then you haven't been following the game very long or very closely. He's got the speed he just doesn't have the proper instincts.
blg post 6 ..."the difference between Gardner stealing 25/35 bases and stealing 40-50 bases is not a major factor in the Yankees qualifying for a playoff spot".... Allow me to add➡ Gardner's base running skills are rather low on the Yankees' priorities. I'll leave it at that...don't want to be redundant. Yawn.
^^^yup...Gardner stealing an additional 15 bases would equate to an extra 5-6 runs...which in turn during the course of the season that could possibly equate to at least another couple of wins...but yeah, it's not important.
...I know... I'm just glad some came up with "WTF?"... so I wouldn't have to type out the words so freaking often.
1st of all, I like Edsels, the metaphor no longer applies here IMO. 2nd- both Gardner and Ellsbury should be stealing a minimum of 40 bases period. With Ellsbury stealing more like 50-60, tho' that may be quit a stretch, yet we all know Jacoby can do it, and Gardner should be doing it... I agree, Ricky Henderson could help the team.....Whitey Herzog insisted as Torre also did with: "Get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in....." albeit a stolen base, or a base hit, even a sacrifice, tho' I'd rather see some small ball, quick strike offense.... It can and has wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers, to have a couple or few base stealers, like Ricky who stole at will, tho' Gardner seems to get caught out, damn near 1/2 of the time he tries to rob a bag..... The mixture of small ball, with long ball 3 run HR, and either a group of SP's who can go the complete 9 inning distance, or- SP's who come off the mound at the end of the 6th inning, to let a hopefully shut down Bull Pen take over, make the game short, or a 6 inning affair..... That is one main reason, we will be lucky to see any SP win more than 20 or 21 games, (even that is a fading stat); let alone 300 Wins....!
Ellsbury was 2nd in the league in SB.....Gardner was tied for 13th in SB with 21. Maybe if Gardy raises his OBP higher than .327 he can steal a few more bases. He's not exactly a big time hitter....the least he can do is get on base more often than .327 clip. ...maybe it's more important for him to GET ON BASE MORE OFTEN. bbbbut.....iiiiiifffff......Gardy can steal more bases, we'll win 5 or 6 more games. lol This guy (Gardner) needs to remain/stay healthy and get on base more often. clowns
