In much of the countryside, it was worse, though how much worse was only beginning to become apparent. The overall death toll soared past 4,000, even without a full accounting from vulnerable mountain villages that rescue workers were still struggling to reach two days after the disaster. Udav Prashad Timalsina, the top official for the Gorkha district, where Saturday's magnitude-7.8 quake was centered, said he was in desperate need of help. "There are people who are not getting food and shelter. I've had reports of villages where 70 percent of the houses have been destroyed," he said.
I have a Nepalese friend who lives in Bend. I haven't spoken with him directly yet, as we aren't close friends. But I've heard that he is freaking out right now, unable to get any word on his mother and brothers. What a terrible position to be in, unable to search or help while friends and family are in peril.
This is terrifying. Looks like they just barely missed it or they would be wiped out. I think I read 18+ died in this.
I know man! The part of the video where he sees the first part of the avalanche and says "Oh fuck!", then turns around and sees that white snow cloud on the other end coming at him was terrifying! That is the moment when you say "Well shit, looks like my time is up!"
Same thing with those tsunami videos, they all start with "do you feel that?" Weird....... then its "oh fuck!" Doesnt even seem like you would have enough time to register that this is really happening
