Why does Monroe want out of Detroit? Maybe because it requires living in Detroit...I think Olshey is trying to build the best bench in the league. If Monroe takes Kaman's spot, he will build leads like crazy against 2nd units. Lamarcus and Plumlee start, Monroe and Leonard come off the bench..what team can deal with that? He's young, Remember Lamarcus at 25?

I'm more on your side than you think on this, Rasta, but can the d-scheming work both ways? As in, Pachulia looked great in MIL's defense, and Monroe did well in DET's, but those won't translate to our Sieve Defensive Scheme (though we were highly ranked for a while). Does it then follow that we could have Beverly/Allen/Kawhi/LeBron/Gobert and Stotts' defense would just negate those talents? And if so, does it matter? And if not, can't a defense be devised to make them look as good as they did on their old team? I mean, the same scheme that worked for last year's personnel may not be the best for this year's. If Josh Smith instead of LMA was our PF (blech) would we run anything close to as many pick-and-pops? Then why would we play the same D?

Yeah its as if some fans expect every target to be Anthony Davis, LeBron and Steph Curry.

Do fringe allstar NBA players have serious holes in there games? You bet they do! Especially when they are at an age players typically continue to improve.

Monroe isn't signing a max deal to take kamans spot. He would start

Predictable when a euro gets traded away from the team.

Iguodala got a ring coming off the bench, even if he does start you've got really good depth in the frontcourt.

It's legitimate to be against signing Monroe

It's not like he's an all-star, and yes, his defense leaves a lot to be desired

It's not a home run move imo

Sarcastic point: I didn't know so many people were watching Detroit play and saying "if only we could have that guy!"
Serious point: Monroe is not a great player. If we had him on a rookie contract and didn't ask much of him, I'd be ecstatic. But having him come in on a big contract is a recipe for disappointment. Detroit is letting him go because he's a limited player.

Look: if you want reliable low post scoring and rebounding and you don't care about defense, try Boban Marjanovic. The guy is huge and skilled and unstoppable. He put up record breaking Euroleague numbers. And he'd be a lot cheaper. But of course you'd have to design your whole scheme around covering up his flaws.

I say again: if the Pistons weren't that great defensively with Monroe and Andre Drummond, how shitty would we be with Monroe and Aldridge? And we're acting like Monroe is a really great low post scorer. But as the article I quoted pointed out - he actually isn't.

Steve Kerr was a genius bring an allstar off the bench..Monroe may very well start. I'm not setting the roster. Whether he starts or not, he'll get big minutes..I'd want his offense when Lamarcus was resting early in games. You're basically looking at Meyers, LA, Monroe and Plumlee..shuffle these four guys any which way according to matchups and you've got a hell of a team

Detroit has no choice of resigning him. That's a stupid argument. He signed the qo last year so he could leave.

And we are Portland, if you had forgotten. Greg monroe, issues and all, would be the best player we have signed in free agency since brian grant.

    He's an upgrade for us

    Here's the thing:
Either LA is staying or he's going.
If he's staying (or if we want to convince him to stay) we want to sign players who will work well with him. A big defensive-minded center would be that. Ideally Marc Gasol, of course, but certainly Tyson Chandler or DeAndre Drummond. Not Greg Monroe.
If LA's going, then we can't afford to tie up our money in less-than-stellar players. Greg Monroe is no replacement for LA, especially if he can't play PF, because then we'd have a logjam at C and no PF, and we've spent all our money. (The idea of Monroe and Leonard playing together only sounds good if you're just thinking of O. It would be horrifying on D.)

So Monroe is far from the best choice whether Aldridge is staying OR going. It just smacks of desperation - just like Kaman did, only more expensive and at a more pivotal point in our development. It's like: "here's a halfway decent player who will actually take our money!" But if we're in that boat, why not offer it to Milsap? Atlanta doesn't have his Bird rights and he could actually play PF. Plus he's actually proved he can be an important part of a really good team, which Monroe certainly hasn't.

People seem to think Monroe is a good player because he puts up good points and rebound numbers. So did JJ Hickson.

I don't remember seeing almost every team in the league want to sign JJ Hickson to a max deal..these guys know a bit about the game you know

I'm starting to warm up on Monroe as a center. He's probably a better defender there then I give him credit for, and if Aldridge can make average centers look good, imagine what he'll do for Monroe. Plus we'd still have money to fill in the wings.
If LA still left, Leonard would be a perfect fit next to Monroe, and Meyers/Monroe/Plumlee/Vonleh is a great young group of bigs. Add Harris or Middleton to that and you have something brewing.
Honestly I wouldn't call that a rebuild, because most rebuilds take years to build a core like that.

Who the hell wants a center that's bad/slow on defense and doesn't protect the rim? And then give that guy a MAX deal? A center is supposed to make it tough on the opposing team in the paint, not easier.

That's just dumb as far as I'm concerned.

I actually want to see how Plumlee develops. Non-stop motor and really athletic for the position. Intrigues me a lot.
