They went to Juco, but didn't finish there. I see where I went wrong there

@BobbyMarks42: Part 1: Under the radar signing this week of POR signing Luis Montero to a 3 year contract (1st year guaranteed). Montero is a 6'7" wing...
@BobbyMarks42: Part 2: Who was heavily recruited of college by Kentucky and Arizona. Went to Westchester CC and played there until the team folded.
@BobbyMarks42: Part 3: Major development project but is worth the risk.

Anyone know why he went to a CC when he was heavily recruited by NCAA colleges?

He couldn't make the grades. CC was a chance to play while getting up to speed.

a lot of that could be attributed to his credits and when he moved to the United States. It sounds like his graduating class are debatable.

@BobbyMarks42: For Luis Montero in POR a small guarantee in year 1. Potential for big upside and will give POR to develop him the right way.

The announcers said they are trying to figure out his position? My guess is his only shot in the NBA will be as a PG. I just can't see him improving his shot enough to be a SG. He is very raw and does show flashes with his passing though. I think that is his only chance.

His shot selection needs work but he is actually a decent shooter. He had to force a few against the shot-clock buzzer but as he gets better looks, I think his shooting will go up. He had good arc, very good rotation and a high release point.

His handle and passing is probably 2nd or 3rd on the team to Dame right now

How many 6'7 guys can do that? He's a project. He's going to struggle. Some of his shots have been forced because no one around him moved. He hasn't played in a year and the last time he did, it was at a community college. He's going to be here all year so let's wait a little before passing off judgements. He's already shown an ability to make things happen when his shot isn't falling. That's a positive trait. And yes, with him, small things like that matter.

There's a reason he got the contract he did, by people that know and have seen him a lot more than any of us.

I don't doubt any of this, I just think PG is his future. His handle and his passing seem to be his best skills. Plus with his height he can see over other PG's.

Yeah I totally agree that PG is his future. His defensive versatility will also be a big plus because he will be able to guard 3 positions eventually once he puts on some weight.

I doubt he goes to the d league. He's not going to develop in portlands system by going down there. He'll develop in practice just like cj and meyers did.

He has terrific instincts in places but is also used to dominating inferior talent. It will take time to adjust...if he ever does. However, those instincts aren't something that are developed. You either have them or you don't. What he does with them is what will determine how far he progresses.
