I agree, it's not happening anytime soon. The whole concept of eliminating nations and unifying the planet and the infrastructure is pure fantasy. Imagine no travel restrictions or passports or currency exchange..free to live and prosper wherever you like. My wife and I would love to snowbird between her home and mine without the visas and restrictions and be free to work both places. I like the global citizen concept. I don't think George Soros or Ruppert Murdoch will agree

Some folks believe that capitalism will destroy itself just like empires have destroyed themselves. Could take hundreds of years but I won't be around to see it

Capitalism fails when you build a widget for $2 and sell it for $1. Like solar panels. So make more of them!

Solar systems now cost around $3.20 per watt. There is a federal tax credit (not write off) of 20% spent which deducts 64¢. Net price of $2.16 per watt.

They have 15 years of life guaranteed. You get, on average, of 4 hours per day of power generated. On average, the system generates 4 watts per day x 365 days = 1,440 watts per year, which is roughly 1.4 kWH per year. Edison charges about 18¢ per kWh, so that 1 watt generates 25¢ per year, costs $2.16, so it would take about 5 years to be paid off.

When the system runs for 15 years, you have 10 years of 25¢ per year of free energy, which is $25 profit for $2.16 spent.

Blah blah blah. I visited a friend in the desert who had solar done. It cost him $80,000. Electric bills there are normally $400 in the dead of summer.

Breaks even in 200 months, or 17 years.

$80k - 16k fed discount = 64k. 80k gives you a 25 kW system. That produces 100kwH per day x .22 kWh = $22 saved per day. Multiply that with 365 = $8k+ per year. That's only at a savings rate of .22 per kWH, which we all know isn't possible. In this scenario, he would pay off the system in 8 years, which is very conservative numbers. There is 7 more guaranteed years on the system, so he would earn $56k on investment conservatively.

    Your math is off

This statement alone is reason to believe we're fucking up our planet. God gave us the free will to do so.
We also have the free will to fix what we're fucking up. The planet has existed millions of years without us and will continue to do so when it has razed us from it's surface.

1 system, if installed correctly, can generate 4.3 hours of power. A kW is the unit of measurement and the H is at the time lapse. So a 25 kW system can actually generate 107 kWh per day. 107 x 30 (days per month) = 30,210 kWh per month.

You say his bill is $400 in summer, probably a $200 average per month per year. That means he averages 900 kWH per month. He bought a system that generates 30k of kWh power and he uses only 900kwh per month. Your friend put a V8 on a skateboard. No wonder?!?!

    My math isn't off.

His system cost $80,000. His electric bill was $400/month.

    $80000/$400 = 200 months. 200 months/12 months per year = 16.7 years.

It doesn't matter who pays the $80,000, it's still a hit to "capitalism."

You're friend is generating 30 times more electricity than he consumes. Your friend is an idiot unless the electric company is buying back the electricity.

If I buy $30 plate of food, but I purchased $900 worth of food at $15 per plate (which I cannot get refunded on plates I don't eat), I wasted a shit ton of money because I can't eat all the food I just purchased. Basically, whoever bought those plates of food is a fucking moron.

He generates enough electricity that he doesn't have to pay the electric company for power used at night. It runs his pool, 2 refrigerators, and 3 HVAC units. Plus his appliances, etc.

And his electric company is the Imperial Irrigation Electric District, which has much lower rates than "Edison"

No, I've followed what's gone on in Germany out of interest in seeing any VIABLE alternative to nuclear for clean energy. What's come out of Germany is a bunch of bullshit. They finally stopped subsidizing solar because it was bankrupting them.

    http://www.theenergycollective.com/...ck-germany-does-not-get-half-its-energy-solar

Here is the most popular meme: "Germany now gets half of its energy from solar panels." This does the rounds of Twitter and Facebook almost every day. In fact, it has now spread to more reputable outlets such as Popular Mechanics, and has even appeared on the website of Richard Dawkins, the inventor of the term meme, under the headline "Germany Now Produces Half Of Its Energy Using Solar." The problem, of course, is that Germany does not get half of its energy from solar panels, and will not do so any time soon.

As with any myth there are multiple versions. In this case it is either that Germany gets half of its electricity or half its energy from solar panels. The latter version is easily refuted by pointing out that the majority of German energy consumption is not in the form of electricity. BMWs, Mercedes and Volkswagens run on petrol and diesel, not electricity.

An even more sobering comparison, given Germany's much trumped green credentials, is with the growth of coal power plants this decade. At the end of last year Germany had a total of 36 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, and this produced 28.3 terawatt hours of electricity. However, between 2011 and 2015 Germany is opening 10.7 gigawatts of new coal power plant capacity. The consulting company Poyry projects that these new coal power plants will have average capacity factors of 80%. If so, they will have a combined average annual output of 75 terawatt hours. In other words, in five years Germany is opening coal capacity which will have an annual output of more than double that from all of its solar panels. However, this comparison is perhaps too generous. Solar panels typically last twenty to twenty five years, but coal power plants easily last twice that long.

What we are seeing in Germany, then, is much more of a coal lock-in than a solar revolution.

I bought a full panel from the solar field in our county for 1200 bucks, gives me 35 years of credits on my bill..you have the option to buy half a panel for 600 from the county. My bill without it is 60 bucks a month in the summer. We don't use much power out here in the woods. When I lived in Hawaii my whole cabin was powered by solar panels with zero bill but limited capability. The guy who spent 80k in the desert for solar energy got took to the cleaners.
