So, as some of you know I am new to the wine industry down in Walla Walla and I have been working at a small poorly run winery owned by some very nice and well intentioned people. Earlier today I got offered a job at another Winery, a much better job and a well known place with about 40 times the production.

This is a very small industry where your name matters. The place I will be quitting is owned by people with very deep roots in this area and they seem to know everyone. I am going to give two weeks notice so that I don't leave them high and dry, but I also know there is very little chance for them to fill my role with anyone of my caliber. I also like the owners as people and feel a bit like I'm screwing them by leaving now, but I need to take the other job for my future.

Any thoughts on how to resign with class?

I would buy them a great bottle of wine, take them to dinner and pretty much say what you just said here with a lot of aloha and extended goodwill

Did you also write a letter of resignation?

Is it better for you and/or your family (assuming you have any kids, etc)?

Then explain that. I quit a job once and told them that the main reason I was leaving was because I finally had to stop putting my job over my own self and my family.

Honestly just tell them that you appreciated the opportunity to work for their company but you think it's time to move on and that you have no problem training the next person to do your former job in the last two weeks.

Agree with the written resignation suggestion. Keep it positive; let them know how working for them has benefited your career.

I would not go into detailed reasons why you are leaving; beyond it is time for you to move on. In small towns like yours, they probably already know the reasons.

Ask if there is anything you can do in the next two weeks to help them.

And best wishes in your new job.

I appreciated working here, but I think there's a better fit for me with this new opportunity.

Bring your gun, just in case.

All these suggestions are great. I'm writing a letter now, thanking them, being very complimentary to them and their wines and explaining why the other job will be a better fit for my long term goals. I also am recommending someone to take my place and have offered to train anyone they wish to hire.

Just download that Johnny Paycheck song and play it for them. Then, say just kidding and hand them your letter.

If they want to know, tell them what you feel about how poorly run their company is and see if you can make something better of it. As long as you know how to make it better that is.

If it really is poorly run, seems like you could both benefit from you staying.

Or just whip your junk out and take two weeks off.

Get their daughter pregnant and demand the winery as a wedding present.

You might suggest they go for corked wine and avoid the Chatteau d' Cardboard version

I'll need all the wine at their establishment to get their daughter pregnant.

So the deed is done. I sent off my resignation and got an immediate response. So glad that's over.

I used one bottle of corked wine to try and stain a tablecloth that had previously seen better days. But when I washed it, all the color came out. Shouldn't have used oxyclean.

    You emailed it?!?

Should have delivered it in person.

    So what was the response?
