Mine too. It has doubled now since Prop 50 took over. Funny, I get about the same income.

Those same peers in California are part of the problem..inflating our real estate prices to make it hard for locals to own a home. Yeah Marz....I agree it's not promising to see this sort of change but I think it's something we need to address in Oregon. Washington state has a system very unlike California's or Oregon's..history does not have to repeat itself even if it has a bad track record but it's wishful thinking that stimulates change.

It would be a tough sell. I would have to see a property tax reduction with the sales tax. But as a population becomes more renters than home owners, the burden of a sales tax and no direct offset if you are not a home owner, becomes a real tough sell. No, there is no direct correlation between rent and property tax.

This would never happen. It would be smoke and mirrors if it was written down as such. Initially sure they may lower it, and then slowly but surely, more bonds would be approved, and then here we are again in the same situation as we are, but with an additional sales tax to boot!

~9% income + property + sales ??? riverman, I love you, but you smoking some serious shit! :D

But on the other hand. I would like to see more, much more local control over schools, curriculum and hiring teachers, with less by the State and even much less by the Federal government.
Which would mean a shift in tax to the local level, via property, or local tax, with a State and or Federal offset reduction. Might begin to see the money spent wisely, perhaps even doing some good.

There's no 'they' here. The property tax rates in this state are controlled by the voters. Y'all could set them to zero if you want, just file an initiative and get people to vote for it.

Stop complaining and do something about it if you think it's a problem.

A sales tax directed solely at schools, which would be removed from property tax except for any locally-approved construction levies, and limited to whatever percentage is required for that purpose (4%?) would be my thought. Any increase would have to be approved by the voters. I hate property tax. It's fundamentally unfair as it's not related to income. I hate seeing retired people on fixed incomes being priced out of their homes by property taxes.

This whole thread has gone to a weird place. If you read the last page, you would have no idea what the original post was about.
