Told my bro what was going to happen once Adams and Hagerty went out the offense. The Oregon defense is unable to stop a team consistently. For all the Ducks preaching about continuity on the coaching staff, they also do it because it's cheap. When Allioti left, they had a chance to update their defense schemes and bring somebody with some better ideas. But they didn't, because then they'd have to up the pay scale of all their coach. I give them for the success on the offensive side of the ball. They continually bring talented playmakers in and it's continued under Helfrich. But on the other side of the ball they are inconsistent. Until they ditch Pellum and bring in a lock down recruiter/d coordinator, they won't sniff a title.

I don't think Oregon deserves crap for not winning the title. Go down the last decade and you'll find every title winner has consistently landed a top ten recruiting class. Oregon hasn't landed a single consensus, across the board top ten class. They got to the game because of coaching and consistency. But teams like Ohio State, Alabama, and Auburn have coaching and NFL caliber players. Marcus Mariota went to Oregon because no one offered him a scholarship. He was an exception to the rule. People give Oregon sh-t for pimping their brand and uniforms. Why not? Even UW AD pulls in more money than they ever will. Without Nike, Oregon would be OSU and they know it.

This Alamo bowl was just like the season...Adams starts, wins, goes out, Ducks start losing. Biggest come back win in bowl history...that's what we gave them. Ducks need some depth and a lot of defense next season..I just hope they don't target a senior QB

I always thought Aliotti was overrated. And Pellum is TERRIBLE. His team's don't even tackle.

The Ducks need to go out and get a good defensive coordinator, be as aggressive on defense as they are on offense, and get back to gang green.

As for the loss, I don't blame Lockie. It was 60% the defense and 40% the poor guy who can't snap a football.

How many times does Helf have to learn this lesson? Have your back-ups ready to play!

The bulk of the blame, however, falls on the defense. As in the Civil War game, they started fine and then just imploded. I seriously believe an investigation of point shaving/game fixing is justified.

I can't say I'm impressed with Pellum at all. But the biggest thing I notice when I watch the games is that we just aren't that talented on that side of the ball. On Offense, it's an embarrasment of riches at the skill positions. All everything recruit Travis Tyner misses the whole year, 1,000 yard rusher/receiver Byron Marshall misses most of it. No Pharaoh Brown, a not yet healthy Devon Allen . . . and it doesn't even matter! Freeman, Addison, & Carrington don't miss a beat. Not to mention Griffin, Brooks-James, and Charles Nelson. Obviously, the b/u QB situation was brutal this year. But next year young (albeit unproven) help with bonified talent is on the way with Jonsen, Kelly, & others to b/u Prukop. But the defense? There was a baffling lack of talent after Buckner. It hit me as I was watching the OSU game. When OSU 255 lb. converted TE to RB Ryan Nall outran two of our DB's (#1 Arrion Springs, & #14 Ugo Amadi). As in, they couldn't catch Nall in the open field & he ran almost 70 yards to paydirt. Both were supposedly "4 Star" recruits they made a big deal about. Amadi they "stole" from LSU. And Springs was supposedly our top recruit a couple of years back defensively. Not to bag on Nall because he does move fairly well for a big guy, but that was shocking & should NEVER happen. Our D-Line, other than Buckner, couldn't get off their blocks all season. Our LB's are undersized with very average quickness, and our secondary wasn't just young, it was overmatched athletically. So yeah, Don Pellum doesn't have the defensive mind of a Bill Belichick. But how would he have done with a cast of say, former Ducks from recent years? A hammer hitting safety like John Boyett. LB's like Kiko Alonzo & Michael Clay. Lockdown corners on the outside like Ifo or Cliff Harris. I'm in favor of dumping Pellum, but I don't expect massively different results until we start recruiting the type of game changers on defense that we have on offense.

But who does the primary recruiting for the defense? Doesn't that partially fall on the DC?

Excellent post Kaydow. I also thought of the talent disparity between offense and defense. It used to be common for teams to 'convert' players to different positions as needed. Maybe today's top recruits won't go along, IDK. Ducks definitely need better players at the point of attach. But from Pellum's first game as DC, his players don't seem to go hard, hit hard, wrap up, or tackle. It's as if they think just hitting a guy is going to bring him down, because, you know, it was enough in high school. I don't disagree they need a talent infusion, but they also need an attitude infusion. They need an identity. Not to play armchair pop psychologist, but maybe the defense feels overshadowed and overlooked.

While I agree with much of your post, you're way off on your assessment of the LBs. Size is not the issue as they're the biggest listed group in the PAC 12 and on par (sizewise) with some of the biggest elite units in the nation. There are definitely issues (tackling, gap maintenance, overall talent) but Oregon doesn't need to get bigger here, they need to get better. I will say that I thought Coleman and Walker were decent overall this year, but for the most part the unit sucked (again). Goodbye Chins!

The DBs were young, but they were also dealing with a lot of injuries to their returning talent which caused all sorts of problems. Like cards, you've got to play with what you're dealt and no one sympathizes with bad luck.
