At the end of the day Bob the chemistry major built a team that was a 6 minute 4th quarter collapse away from winning a championship. Indiana was a sacrificial lamb coming out of the east that year. That collapse was all on the players, so however you feel about his methods he did build a championship team.

This is how I feel about his methods.

I read that linked article. What did this mean "Allen turned down a possible deal to bring Houston center Hakeem Olajuwon to Portland, in part because of Allen's friendship with Clyde Drexler."?
That doesn't make sense; anyone have more info on that?

I don't know, but I have to think that would have been when he was traded to Toronto, so thank god the deal didn't go through.

Maybe Clyde is who Houston wanted for Hakeem?

Highly doubt that's when it happened. I imagine Clyde was trying to help Hakeem get the contract he wanted from Houston, but it ultimately fell apart and he was traded to Toronto.

That happened years after Drexler was traded to Pukeston

Yeah, none of this makes sense. I do recall rumors of Hakeem-to-Portland BEFORE we dealt Clyde to Houston a couple years later. But it always seemed like Clyde would still be here under those rumors.

Hmm.... the quote from the article actually makes it sound like Paul hadn't been the owner for very long.

the Toronto bit was late in Hakeems career.

It was at the very end. I think it was his last year in the league.

Wait! But my argument was that Paul was doing Clyde a favor in hopes that Hakeem wouldn't leave Houston and would retire a Rocket. It sounds more plausible to me than Houston trading Hakeem in his prime.

    And there is the rub.

Dame/CJ/Crabbe has emerged as a decent backcourt. Plums, Davis, and Aminu would be a good second string - but none of them are more than "good" players. Harkless and Alexander have shown no development. Leonard is what he is. Vonleh doesn't look like a starter on a contender - let alone a "star".

Unlike some of you, I believe Stotts has done an incredible job with this bunch. This team needs a major influx of talent along the front line to become a contender. This is as good as it gets with the current roster!

Just over half a season for a bunch of new guys who haven't played together before and most are getting their first real shot and you think this is as good as it gets?
    Really?
    Wow....

IF the bulk of players improvements were made in the first half of the first season of their careers...Nevermind. This is so far fetched not even worth trying to oppose...

    I have comments about semantics.

Who is "etc." Alexander and Montero are all that are left. "Etc." is a wording to make something seem like more than it is.

The words about Adelman were harsher and more direct, but the Oregonian editor edits articles to make them biased against Bob Whitsitt. The paragraph subconsciously prejudices the reader with the leading comment that what you are about to read is harsher.

Seems to me that etc is a word for things that seem less than the headliners...
Concert tonight! Featuring Elvis, Muddy Waters, Ray Charles and etc.......I've been in a few of the "etc" bands and it's not a compliment
