You realize it's possible that both perspectives are valid, right? Crabbe/Leonard for Horford would (most likely) make the team better, both short and long term. However, Crabbe likely still has room for growth in his game on both sides of the ball, and would be quite valuable to this team as a 3rd guard playing starter's minutes at $12M/season.

Yes, I'd do the trade you suggest if it's offered, but if it doesn't happen that doesn't mean that Crabbe is some waste of space and will be vastly overpaid. It's very possible that he's going to be worth exactly what he's paid, and then some.

The only way you move for Horford- in my opinion- is two fold.

#1 you have a guarantee that he'll resign (remember he's a FA after the season) so that's a HUGE if. Personally, I'm not moving Crabbe/Leonard 2 guys that I have the option to match on if necessary for a 3 month rental of Horford.

#2 I only make that move for Horford if you determine that he's the last guy needed to complete the team. He's a little outside the age window that Olshey has associated w/this team, so looking to add him to me seems like a final piece type addition- not the bedrock upon which you build a team. If this was 3 years ago, totally different story.

I wouldn't trade for him now either. Though I think he might be a good free agent target in the offeason. Why give up an asset like Crabbe when you can just try to sign Al in the offseason?

Why trade for Horford when you can just outright sign him in the offseason? Makes no sense.

I think he would be the perfect pick up though. He's the type of player that is going to be playing the same way until he's 38. Not reliant on athleticism. Shoots midrange jumpers, makes smart plays.

Exactly. I wasn't saying crabbe is a better player than horford. Just that I wouldn't give up an asset like crabbe for him. It's not like were contending this year, there'd be no point to it.

in a hypothetical word- the deal is worked out in the background, and the trade is agreed to on this premise. This keeps the competition to a minimum for his services... technically against the CBA but I've always heard rumblings of this kind of thing happening. That's only justification for going the route of the trade in my opinion- even then, I'm not someone who wants Horford here now anyways.

Larry Sanders is coming back to the NBA. Does Olshey go after him?

What makes you guys think a player like Horford would sign here? Have we ever got a big name All Star free agent to sign here? If we could land him though we would be instant contenders.

I am not convinced that Horford is what we need right now. He is under 6'9" in bare feet. Although he has long arms he is not the rim protector we need. I would rather give his minutes to Vonleh moving forward and use our assets on a dynamic SF or a long center.

No doubt he is a solid player so if we signed him this summer I would not be bummed, but no way do I give up Crabbe for a possible 28 game rental.

I'm not sure he makes us into an "instant contender" (probably pushes us from mediocre to good), but I think you're pretty close to the truth when you question if we could even get him in the first place.

The Blazers will only have approx. $30 million in cap space next season. But, almost half of our roster will be FAs, 1/3 will be RFAs.

    RFAs.
Crabbe will get paid. But does Olshey match offers on Leonard, Harkless & Alexander? These 4 RFAs may use up a big chunk of the $30 million.
Is Frazier worth paying again as the 3rd PG?

    FAs
    Kaman, probably not coming back
Henderson, not sure what Olshey is thinking for him?

That is 7 roster spots to fill using the $30 million.

Then the following off season RFAs CJ & Plumlee get paid.

This roster appears to be built around the available future cap space.

Looking into the future, it is hard to see any trade before this deadline that takes on salary beyond this season. Not saying it can not happen, but Olshey like options. It appears he can go in several directions if needed, again. Keep this roster mostly together and fill in the gaps with value minor FA signings, or, make a major trade, or sign a max FA.

When does Olshey go all in, and make a major deal that takes PA into luxury tax territory? It probably will not happen before this trade deadline.

    Crabbe - I hope we re-sign him

Meyers - I really don't care. I hope we trade him before the deadline.

Harkless - I think he's worth another year or two. I doubt he gets a huge offer. I would bring him back.

Alexander - He's nice to have on the roster because of the potential, but he hasn't played a minute of NBA basketball.

I thought it was $30 million in space WITH all the cap holds. There's no reason why we can't max one player and then sign all our guys.

If anything we should be browsing for younger players that are stuck on the bench somewhere. Someone like Lucas Nogueira off the top of my head

Not a big deal but I'm pretty sure Alexander is under contract for next season.

I am not 100% sure. According to one report that was linked in the Howard thread, the Blazers will have $31.4 million in cap space. But they mention this.

Agree, and I saw that conflicting info before I posted. He is also listed as a possible RFA. Not sure, but next season maybe an option year. Not a big deal either way.

With the injury to Festus Ezeli, I wonder how far his value will drop this summer
Same with Mozgov (Who has been battling injuries)

    Free agent centers: http://hoopshype.com/2016/01/16/nba-free-agency-2016-centers/

    As for SF's this summer

Nic, Barnes, Marvin Williams, (I doubt Parsons would ever come here)

I don't want to over pay on Barnes, but I do not see many other options other than keeping what we have.
Aminu, Crabbe, Henderson and Harkless are not horrible.

    http://hoopshype.com/2016/01/16/nba-free-agency-2016-small-forwards/

GS has some decisions to make this summer with Barnes, Ezeli, and Speights
