I actually think Harrison barnes would seriously consider Portland.

any reason to think that? and I have my doubts he is worth the max which I think will start at 22-23 mil per give or take a bit, and he is an RFA and not a UFA, seems improbable ot me

yeah sure but we'll have more of that devalued money than other teams will...also a lot of max contracts coming up for the luxury tax teams...we're in good position..the change affects everyone the same but the playing field is not the same

I feel like if you assess talent and trajectory and both are fairly even then you stay with what you've got as long as they are a good fit for the system. It's for this reason I would choose Crabbe over Barnes.

For what it's worth, Barnes has been solidified in his role for a lot longer than Crabbe has been in his.

but tell me, who was the last big FA signing POR had and how many players left last summer because of $$$ and where they wanted to play while we had capspace?

With 90% of the league potentially having max cap space I could see Meyers and Harkless getting over $10 million per season; while Hendo and Crabbe get close to the max.

It sounds ridiculous at first but consider the talk about Tobias Harris, who basically lost his starting spot for a lottery team and Greg Monroe, who again is struggling as a starter on a lottery team. Both are having these issues after signing max $16+ million per year contracts, and both are considered underpaid players with value going forward!

Would've though there is no chance Wes with an Achillies tear or Kanter who was given away from Utah got max deals but thats what they got last summer, and that was before any historic cap increase.

Factor in CJ and Plumlee being eligible for extensions, if we want to keep most our young guys we may not have the long term salary space it seems as though we'll have at first glance.

But it makes no sense to mention guys who left for money when we made the choice not to offer them a contract.

Hibbert was a big free agent who was on his way to accept an offer from us. As a rfa, he was going to get matched, but a rfa accepting an offer is still someone willing to come.

Mentioning Monroe choosing Milwaukee also makes no sense to me. He went because he felt at the time, with our mass exodus and everyone predicting am awful season, that Milwaukee gave him his best chance of winning. He also spurned NY. Players are generally looking for $$, winning potential, and fit.

Come on Riverman I said "big" signing? While I think these were good value signings for rotation players I am talking about a REAL difference maker, a clear star, tell me when and who. It does not happen often.

Stotts system which gives players freedom, his relationship with Lillard, and culture fit Olshey is prioritizing. Would not be surprised one bit if he's the main target and Olshey offers him the max. Don't see GS matching that at all.

I'm not someone who thinks the past necessarily defines the future or we'd have been the Jail Blazers forever

Who was the last real difference maker, clear star that even changed teams? Who was the last big star chicago signed? Biggest star NY has landed recently was an overpay for a broken amare. Lakers couldn't keep Dwight, didn't land lebron, Durant, etc. Who's the last big star they signed?

We have a new team, culture and identity forming here and I just don't get the "poor us" feeling that we're somehow always a team in the dumpster. Here's a question for the nostalgia folks around here...who's the last Blazer that demanded to be traded?

I said "big FA signing", what did you think I meant? I meant a star player, maybe not top 10 in the league but perhaps someone in the next tier. Probably the best FA signing (that played with the team) in the LAST TWENTY YEARS is Brian Grant, I love Brian but even he was not a real star or Top NBA player. We have a problem in getting star players to come here in FA, if you don't agree with that fine, but the evidence is there.

Harrison Barnes isn't even as good as Tobias Harris. Who the hell is paying him the max? Oh wait, Orlando.

that is not what is being discussed, it's whether top players WANT to come here if the pay is the same? I hope it changes but it is not yet reality - do you really not see that?

Our ONLY hope is that some free agents see us getting to the cusp of a championship. Unless we fortify this roster, I don't see us appealing to any top-tier players. Neil need to get us into the conversation for WCF or we are no more appealing than Utah.
