Interesting set of parameters... Don't you think it's better to grade based on what actually happened rather than what you may believe could have happened?
What, like a pass/fail grading system? Either we won the trade or we didn't? I guess the other way to look at it is on a bell curve in comparison to other teams' trade deadline deals. I think the Pistons did better than we did; I'd say the Nuggets did better; if the pick the Grizz got from LA is 2016 or 2017, I'd say they did better too. Yeah, B-.
I gave a B+. It was a pair of solid moves but neither one effectively moved the needle. Neil will use the pick well. We upgraded at backup PG.
I like the addition of tradeable assets. Blazer will be player in the summer for sure in terms of real upgrades.
In terms of trade value, teams generally ascribe greater value to picks that can be used more immediately.
We upgraded backup PG by A LOT, imho. Frazier might have been a cool dude, but he was one of the worst players on the team. Brian Roberts comes in playing roughly as well as Alan Crabbe, which is a yuooge upgrade.
We traded Tim Frazier, and roughly 4 million dollars for Brian Roberts, a 2018 1st, and a 2nd rond pick(no details yet?). Denver traded Randy Foye for Augustin, Novak, and 2 2nds. They took on additional salary in Novak. We spent 3 million more than them, and get a 1st and a 2nd insteadof 2 2nds. How exactly did they do better than us? That's ridiculous. Grizzlies get the Clippers 2019 pick(no word yet on protection). COuld end up being 2021, though, depending on when Clippers fulfill previous requirements. Not this year or next year. Not better. I like Detroit's trade for Tobias Harris. I think they balanced off their very good deal with a poor deal, of giving up a first round pick this year with light protction for Motiejunas.
Which is how we were able to get picks which will make us better as Dame/CJ age out of their championship windows. A draft pick is worth as much in 2018 as it is in 2016, roughly (good/bad drafts not withstanding). If you can take advantage of GMs erroneous devaluing of future picks because your target window for hitting home runs in the draft is 2018-2020, then you're winning the deal.
I thought Philly used their space better with the Kings trade. If the Cavs pick has little protection, I will change my grade from the C+ I gave.
I like the Roberts + pick trade that cost us nothing a lot. We should be a better team now, and next season if we re-sign Roberts. Grade A I believe we should have got more for saving the Cavs so much $$$. Plus the protected future first is 2 drafts away, maybe. We did not lose on this trade, but we did not improve the team now or next season. Grade C+ Average Grade B+
