    Interesting question. Lots of variables.
    Lets say:
    - The Blazers let Henderson, Kaman and Roberts go this summer.
    - The Blazers sign a max free-agent this summer, at around $26M.
    - The Blazers sign Leonard ($10M), Harkless ($9M), and Crabbe ($8M) this summer.
    - The CAP is expected to be around $108M next summer (2017).
    - Considering M Plumlees has a cap hold of $5.8M, and CJ has a cap hold of $8.0M, the Blazers will have approximately $16.6M of CAP space going into the summer of 2017.

Since CJ's cap hold is $8.0M, and his expected pay day will probably be at or just slightly below max - estimate around $20M - $25M, then extending him early will eat up that entire $16.6M of expected CAP room for summer 2017. Is it worth the risk of waiting hoping we can find a good bargain with that $16.6M, or do we lock up CJ early?

Since CJ will be a restricted free agent, we can match any offer. If we're okay with assuming he'll get the max (around $25M), then we hold off and go after another free agent around the $16.6M range. Then go over the CAP to match any max offer for CJ.

If we're hoping to get him at less than the max, we sign him to an extension as early as possible.

    CJ's a keeper.

*Edit: BBinsider's cap hold for Plumlee looks incorrect. It should be $5.8M. Updated my numbers.

How is it that Mase has a larger caphold than CJ? Plums was drafted like 10 picks after CJ.

    hm

But ya, we save a bunch of capspace to go after FAs next summer if we wait to extend CJ. Kinda like SA did with Kawhi this past summer while opening up space for you know who

Aminu got better and better as the playoffs went on. If he was a FA this summer, he'd be one of the most coveted out there.

Is there a poison pill contract we can offer Drummond?

Well like I said, think Ed but much stronger. think about all the times him or plums got an couldn't get position for an offensive board, or they did but just couldn't muscle it back up or got it blocked. that strength would equate to more conversions, and more chances at conversions.

I can't decide on Aminu. He's ok and all, but his 12 PER is garbage for a starting SF

Yea that's not a guy you let go of, even with the issues at the line he has.
it would be a magic/shaq type fuck up to not to.

Aminu was adjusting to a whole new role this season. Even in the playoffs, you could see him get exponentially better game-by-game. I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

He played significantly better after being moved to the 4 and in the playoffs. That's pretty important.

Shot 40% from 3 in 6 and a half attempts per game in the playoffs.

He seems like a guy that is dependent on his teammates but in the right composition he's a perfect glue guy.

I think they pretty much did away with that. Still, Drummond is getting maxed. That's a done deal.

I think what Bones was saying is the previous poster's link didn't have Varejao's contract stretched (and should have) so the numbers were wrong that the poster was going off of.

Firstly, they called them toxic offers - that's more directed at MM.

The idea was to front load an offer with guarantees built in that required a large lump sum right at signing. Essentially hitting a less wealthy team the hardest.

The new CBA limited the ability to do that greatly (almost making it extinct) so it won't cause a team not to match on that alone.
