Jay Allen is on the radio saying that the Blazers front office is preparing a contract offer for him in the neighborhood of $20 million over 5 years. The RipCityMornings guys say that sounds too low. Rick Carlisle and Stan Van Gundy both get $7M/year. Steve Kerr only gets $5M, as will Luke Walton as he takes over the Lakers.

If they're only offering $4M/year, are they lowballing him significantly, and could that be a problem?

Sure it could be a problem if we are low-balling him but we have 1 more year with him irregardless correct? Team option for next year?

I would not pay him in the upper 3rd of coach salaries. I would pay him right below that though so more than 4 MIL. And I think the 4th year better be team option again. Basically Stotts has earned it but I also not prepared to hand him the keys forever.

Carlisle has a ring as does Kerr. Van Gundy has been to the Finals.....and the Lakers are, well, in disarray. It is just an initial offer. Then there is negotiation and you reach a final settlement. No worries.

That sounds like a fine contract for a guy assuming JUST the coaching role.

These big deals that you see now are for guys who are both coach and GM.

Another caveat to consider: both Neil and Terry are represented by the same guy. Doubt there is much low-balling happening here.

What's his cap hold? If we do sign him $4mill we would have to include a massage therapist or something if we ever wanted to trade him for Carlisle to make the salaries match.

Looking at coaching salaries, that seems low to me. I think 5 sounds about right, but who knows about incentives or whatever. Then again, the players love him, but maybe management wants more defense?

Yeah I'm not reading too much into this. Standard negotiations.

Who cares how much other teams pay their coaches, they fire them after the first year anyways. Yes the contracts are guaranteed.

Does Terry want a job coaching the up and coming team in the NBA for 5 years? Then he won't laugh at 20M, that's a lot of cheddar, and there really aren't any better situations around the league right now.

I bet it's a lowball base with a ton of incentives baked in (make WCF, make Finals, win Finals, COTY, etc.)

Wish someone would low-ball me with a $4 mil per year offer.

Jessica? I've read good things about her in many public lavatories.

I tell you what, they aren't true, at least as far as even getting ahold of her in the first place...

When did the NBA start allowing coaches to be traded? I know Boston traded Doc to LAC. Have other coaches been traded?

The only other coach traded in the NBA that I know of was Stan Van Gundy from MIA to ORL. They got picks for him. But that was one year after MIA let him go (however they still held his rights which is why ORL had to pay for him).

There are lots of cases where NFL and MLB coaches were traded though.
