Love the dog, hate the name. Why is it that when I read stories like this I tear up a bit, but if this was about the owner of the dog, I wouldn't get mushy at all?
I can't say this enough, stop taking your pets to the vet when it's time to put them down. The vet will come to you to do it and then take the pet away to be cremated. Have your pets last moments be at a place they love. Most pets don't enjoy the vet. They're stressed the moment they get there. If you see the video it's nice that everyone showed up to salute the dog but they could have done it at the dog's home. When it was time to say goodbye to my last dog I did it on his favorite blanket in the backyard surrounded by his favorite toys. He was where he loved to be with the things and people he loved to be with. Also it's much easier to cry like a big baby at your own home when it's over.
Yes, most will. If your regular vet won't just call around to find one that will. It's so much easier on the pet and the owner. Also lots of vets will come to your home for a regular visit/checkup.
When we had to put down our Red Doby we didn't know what was wrong with her. It was rough on her to take her to the vet, but doing so let us know with an ultrasound that she had multiple tumors and that it was time to say goodbye. It was weird that they couldn't figure this out the months before when she was having some major health problems. I suppose maybe if it was obvious I might call the vet for a home euthanasia visit. But, what do they do with the remains?
With Rudy I had little choice. He was feral so it was try and try to trap; I could not schedule an appointment. Just heard of Help to Heaven that does exactly that. As for the remains, depends on local law, here in California I've buried my cats. A large dog might be a problem.
I wanted my dog cremated so they took the dog to the crematorium for me and I picked up his ashes a few days later.
I got the pup paw. Couldn't deal with the dog ashes and all that. She had a stroke a couple months ago and the paw imprint was enough (and inexpensive).
