Honestly. I did this at the very beginning of the thread and got crucified for it. Now we are giving out likes for it?
After learning pashtu my German friend said I spoke German with a Russian accent bc of the throaty ch's and pronouncing differences between kaaf and qaaf. Didn't realize the Russians had the market on that cornered.
Is there a "bad" way of saying i'chaim? For instance, if you have a very slight pronunciation error in Dari, you go from saying "Good morning" to "happy (man parts)" Not the thing you would want to say to the Minister of the Interior. (Not me, a friend of mine)
Of course I got it. I admit I was stumped at first. I mean, I got the "rex", which obviously ties to Tyrannosaurus Rex, but I missed the connection with Japan. Then, it came to me...Godzilla! Or should I say, "Godzirra!"?
Okay. My faith in this site has been properly restored. I was beginning to think i missed some rule changes or something.
Notice how this thread has beat the living daylights out of this and there is barely any feelings of wrong doing felt? Why is that? Is it because we think Asians are not going to get bent out of shape? Because we don't care if they get bent out of shape? Or is it because we, in our hearts and actions, know we are not in real life harboring ill will towards them and this is all in good fun and everyone knows that or should be able to tell that? I personally would feel much less inclined to go on and on as we have done here about African-Americans instead.
So why are they not a protected class? Because they are doing well in the aggregate? Because they don't have a history of acting up? Honest questions.
A few factors. Asians are usually quiet and non confrontational. Their success as a minority in the country also contributes. Non threatening, wealthy, less violent and smart/educated. The language is not as accessible to Americans so it all sounds like Ching Ching to them. Mainly the success though, most people see Asians as basically white since they really don't cause crimes and are smart. Around the world the trend holds as well.
So is "protected class" a euphemism for African-Americans and LGBTQ? Basically the PC 3rd rail that one isn't allowed to make jokes of because they have shown a tendency to get their feelings hurt and then lash out more, at times, when it isn't truly a big deal and thus make mountains out of molehills? Honest questions. Seeking clarification from my board brethren. Pardon my ignorance.
I have to disagree with the history of not acting up...I was in an Asian war...the Japanese acted up quite a bit..Kim Jong Un acts up...Mao acted up....Chiang Kai Shek acted up...and you're right about racism in the States when it comes to Asians. I had a long argument here awhile back about stereotyping Asians..when Trump did it, it pissed off my Asian wife and all my inlaws.
Who the hell is this rookie coming on here trying to put us on blast? Go away new person.....you are adding stress to this place.
I've seen/heard people use "l'chaim" on TV and feel like I can pronounce it pretty well but I can't seem to do it without hawking a loogy.
