Funny how people are freaking out about the Seattle ties when Calabro was originally a Hoosier. I watched his brother do local sports in Indiana for years before moving out here.
Criminy, as a fan since 1970, I'm still mourning the firing of Jimmy Jones as play by play guy....and was just getting adjusted to Barrett and Rice. Sigh.............solid hire, very shabbily done.....
On the Seattle thing I've always heard that the NFL has a rule that doesn't allow an owner to own more than one team in the same city, is that true?
If a hire in the Blazers' broadcasting world can "move the needle," then this is certainly one of those moves.
You also claimed they were fired without cause. We don't know that either. Most such contracts contain language that allow either party to terminate the contract early under specific conditions. I suspect, but obviously don't know, that one of the conditions for early termination by the team was the waiving of any non-compete clause. Both Barrett and Rice have tweeted about potential future employment options. I don't think they'd be actively lobbying for work the day they were canned if they knew they couldn't work in their chosen field for a year. BNM
“People shouldn’t have any misgivings about me being a Sonics guy coming down there,” said Calabro prior to calling Game 6 of the 2016 NBA Finals. “The Sonics have moved on, I’ve moved on, it’s a new chapter and I’m excited to get going.” - Kevin Calabro http://forwardcenter.net/calabro-joins-trail-blazers-as-new-television-play-by-play-announcer/
Fantastic hire. I knew it would be Calabro. Theres a reason this guy does ESPN games. Hes one of the best in the business.. And to the folks thinking this is one more step closer for a move to Seattle, you guys are hilarious. That is silly. Portland packs its stadium, is becoming a hotbed for expensive real estate, and is projected to grow tremendously. Last I read 250,000 people are expected to move here by 2035. Even when the fear was there, it was simply leverage to get the city to pay for a stadium and not a real threat. Again this is a great hire for a great future coming up
And his voice. Oye vey. And why should we assume he'd be any good at it? So many other better candidates out there.
